Why I will NOT hire unpaid interns

unpaid internships are illegal in Iceland and if you bring foreigners in to do internships it's considered human trafficking. that should be standard worldwide.

I did an an “unpaid” internship during college, but I put it in quotes because my college had scholarships specifically for people who took unpaid scholarships, if requirements were met by both the business and the student. I ended up getting paid more than some of my friends in paid internships that way! Sadly, all I learned from that internship was I wanted to change the focus of my career.

Unpaid internships are legal as long as the intern is just learning and not producing anything of value for the employer. It's just that 99.99% of unpaid internships do not meet these criteria.

If you're an unpaid intern, you CANNOT be doing the work an employee could be doing.

My understanding is you're basically ONLY there to observe. Anything else might be illegal

Unless the business can prove that having the intern there is actually more of a burden than having no one there, then they should be paid.

In the hospital system they call them externships and they justify their low pay for it by saying “you’re still in school and not licensed “

They know that they have interns over a barrel when it comes to hordes of young, fresh out of college people desperately trying to get their foot in the door in such a cut-throat environment. Sure, the interns consent to the whole process, however, that doesn't mean that it isn't exploitive.

I'm fighting physical health issues, and some of my (apparently independently wealthy) extended family have schemes where I'm supposed to find an internship while I heal. Guess how much crap I've been dealing with because I've been pointing out everything you've said.
