OVERCOMING DENTAL FEAR: Top 5 Methods 🦷 [Pediatric Dentist]

5 Methods:
1. Distraction, Show Feared Object to remove Fear of Unknown (but not in detail if actually scary)
2. Positive Reinforcement - helpful to be detailed with compliment. pt had limited English understanding so I kept it generic with compliments. (i.e. You did a great job staying still like a statue and keeping your mouth open, like a lion yawning in the jungle)
3. Light Touches - desensitize, reassure, distract
4. Tell-Show-Do - CLASSIC METHOD
5. Reassurance, highlighting positives - again, helpful to be detailed. Rewrite the experience, empower the child and his/her accomplishments, sympathize if patient had difficulty, but focus on what they did well on, not the hardships

Also effective but not used here:
6. HUMOR!

5 Strategies:
1. Distraction, Show Feared Object to remove FEAR of UNKNOWN (but not in detail if actually scary). Squirted the "water" onto glove, without showing needle clearly. Shoutout to Dr Kei Chan (mission teammate, peds dentist) for showing his helpful tactic!

2. Positive Reinforcement - helpful to be detailed with compliment. (i.e. You did a great job staying still like a statue and keeping your mouth open, like a lion yawning in the jungle). If pt has limited English understanding, can keep it generic (i.e. wow, GREAT job!) and light in tone (positive).

3. Light Touches - desensitize, reassure, distract

4. Tell-Show-Do - CLASSIC METHOD

5. Reassurance, highlighting positives - again, helpful to be detailed. Rewrite the experience, empower the child and his/her accomplishments, sympathize if patient had difficulty, but focus on what they did well on, not the hardships

when i was little, i had about 5 cavities that needed to either be extracted or filled. when they gave me the shot, they had me close my eyes and they didn’t tell me what they were doing. i remembered feeling a dull pain in my cheek and said “ow”. the sweet woman who was working on me said “sorry, that’s just my nail. they’re kinda sharp. i’ll get that out of your way” i didn’t realize until years later that it was actually a needle, and if she had told me what it was then, i would’ve flipped my lid. gotta appreciate doctors who are good with kids.

If I had a dentist like this as a kid I probably wouldn't cry my eyes out and white knuckle the chair for fillings.

At my dentist as a kid I would be strapped down to a table and have something in my mouth to keep me from biting the dentist’s finger..I wish they were more like you. You’re so caring and gentle with your patients ❤

He's one of the few dentists who have empathy towards their patients.

Others just dig out the tooth alongwith money. Brutal.

I admire any professional who takes the time to interact with children, instead of just doing their job.

I’m autistic and I often cry during procedures at the dentist. But I’m not ashamed of that because I love and trust my dentist and she knows I’m not crying because of her. Building trust with your patients and making them feel safe is such an important part of care, thank you for helping this child feel safe while you helped him. You both did great❤️

Im a 23 year old woman and i still tear up when the needle enters my mouth but it definitely helps to just close your eyes and hum a little because the pinch basically becomes a light poking. When i was psyching myself out at 16 i had a very mean dentist that didn't help whatsoever and just got annoyed. It makes me happy to see a patient dentist like Yoo

My doctor used to treat me like a child because I hate needles. She took care of me and took care of me, even though I was old. Really, all caring doctors deserve respect.💕

so glad you pay attention to the kids' feelings and when theyre scared. i wish all dentists would do that. when i was three i was scared at the dentist and started crying. instead of comforting me, my dentist threatened to call the cops if i didnt shut up.

this makes me so happy, more professionals need to be gentle with kids and take the time to calm their nerves. they’re just little and don’t understand 🥺

I’m crying dude. I’ve had the worst fear of dentists cause growing up 2 of my childhood dentists would bully me for having a little bit of nerves. It’s like this video helped me move forward a little bit. Thank you for helping the kids. Please keep doing this and don’t stop. Thank you
