OVERCOMING DENTAL FEAR: Painless injection 🦷 [Pediatric Dentist]

5 Methods:
1. Distraction, Show Feared Object to remove Fear of Unknown (but not in detail if actually scary)
2. Positive Reinforcement - helpful to be detailed with compliment. pt had limited English understanding so I kept it generic with compliments. (i.e. You did a great job staying still like a statue and keeping your mouth open, like a lion yawning in the jungle)
3. Light Touches - desensitize, reassure, distract
4. Tell-Show-Do - CLASSIC METHOD
5. Reassurance, highlighting positives - again, helpful to be detailed. Rewrite the experience, empower the child and his/her accomplishments, sympathize if patient had difficulty, but focus on what they did well on, not the hardships

Also effective but not used here:
6. HUMOR!

I'll never forget this handsome and gentle dentist I visited when I was like 8-9yrs. He was telling me how brave and strong I was while injecting me, with the sweeting voice ever. I wanna go back there 😭

You are so gentle! What Dentist needs are a strong hands of a surgeon and gentleness toward patients.

You're so nice and comforting. When i was little, i had a traumatic experience when i was about that age. The doctor didn't give the novacane (idk how to spell it lol) enough time make me numb so he started drilling into my tooth and when i started screaming he told me I was fine and LYING about the pain (i was like 4-5) and then proceeded to have all the nurses hold me down in the chair while he drilled. I remember my vision was red because it was so painful. I don't remember much from my childhood but i do remember that 😅. To this day im terrified of the dentist no matter how hard i try to get over it. These videos are very healing, its great to know there are such caring places!!

My dentist had a poster of dolphins taped to the ceiling and he would always point them out to me when I was in the chair. I had lots of teeth problems as a child and he was really good at helping me through.
It's so important for children to have attentive They make such a huge difference and make scary situations less scary!

I had a terrible experience as a child with a dentist (thank God to my parents who stopped the procedure halfway) which led me to fear dentists until certain age. I would visit every time with fear and stress until I reached 19 and found a great doctor who taught me how not to fear dentist visits. I know that child will always remember this. Wish more doctors were like you. My kids’s dentist is also one kind woman I am forever thankful for 🙏🏼

Needle out of sight is BRILLIANT! When I went to the dentist as a kid, I HATED the black rubber blocks they put in my mouth because I always ended up getting pinched by them! Little did I not know until a decade later - they were the bite blocks things and they weren’t pinching me - I was getting a novacaine shot. HAHA

My little sister's dentist said "if you don't stop crying it will hurt more" that's really terrible.😞

They're speaking cebuano. I wonder if this is during a medical mission here in Philippines? As always, thank you for doing great work doc❤

Poor baby..scared of the unknown…professionals are miracle workers. They’re building up this child’s future experience with going to the dentist.

He is so nice and sweet. I really hated it when my mother asked when I was 4 years. I said “I don’t want to, it hurts.”, but just watching a video that it looked scary and just hurting a lot. I felt uncomfortable afterwards. But the video is so inspirational. ❤

He is great at his work. He really cares and goes the extra mile for his young patients, trying to show dentists you should always fear. Dentists like this guy, show its ok to be scared, but also its not so scary .

At my dentist I have to get these a lot bc I have quite a few mouth problems and have to get teeth pulled and get surgeries, THEY NEVER LET THE NUMBING GEL ACTUALLY NUMB BEFORE THEY DO IT, so normally they give me laughing gas and put numbing gel over the area, but they don’t wait long enough and it hurts so bad. Also I’m so glad I’ve never seen the syringe, because I would probably jump off that chair and run away, but now I have and I will definitely be terrified next time.
