Shermer's book "Why People Believe Weird Things" was a key part of my deconstruction. I was confused about where I fit in. Its is an excellent and easy read that covers the basics of how to examine claims, and avoid self deception.

As an atheist, I wish that an afterlife could be true, but with no real evidence, I have to conclude it's not.
It's heartbreaking because I know that it means that when life ends, it ends.
But, it also means that it's precious, and it's important for me to do something with mine while I'm here.
