Donald Plesance and Peter Falk. Two wonderful actors. Providing a master class.

Donald Pleasants really nailed the role of a guy who's passionate about wine. Not once does it feel false or over-the-top. You almost wish you had such a passion.

Peter Falk talking about working with Donald Pleasence: ~ "A joyous experience with a brilliant actor--working with Pleasence--that's Heaven! One of my all-time favorite guest stars. Playing a murderer, his spontaneous child-like glee at Columbo's ability to identify a particular Cabernet--that moment is burned into my memory."

In the top 5 of best Columbo episodes, imo. Even though the killer is kind of a stuffy snob, I think he really became fond of Columbo despite trying to elude his suspicions.

If he wasn't a murderer they could've been best friends

"You really are a sly one, Lieutenant."--Adrian Carsini. Many of the murderers have come up with a single word to describe Columbo, mostly words with negative connotations, such as "devious." But "sly" is one of the most accurate ones because it means being artful or guileful while demonstrating skill in concealing one's aims and methods. That's Columbo!

Columbo: "Please show me the scene of the crime"
Killer: "Well when you put it that way"

This is another terrific episode where the viewer can sympathize with the murderer.

I love the scene in the restaurant when Columbo slips the two guys the money and then they talk to each other and sample the wine for themselves....That moment when Donald reveals the wine is spoiled is equally rivaled by that moment where Columbo reveals his gloved hands in the art theft episode---true brilliance! So enjoyable!

Notice that when they drink the wine, Carsini holds the glass from the bottom and Columbo holds the glass from the top. True wine experts never hold the glass from the top. Donald Pleasants nailed that fine detail, he was THAT good!

Donald Pleasance was yet another actor who shown on Columbo, by being able to play against Peter Faulk and give a true to the character performance. You know that Carsini is starting to admire Columbo for taking the time to learn about wine, but also the sharpness of his mind as he deduces which one it was. Even at the end, when he's caught, Carsini still bears a grudging admiration for the man

The exterior shots were at Mirassou winery in San Jose, sadly no longer there (torn down for housing) I was lucky to go there once back in the 90s. The actor who plays the victim (Gary Conway) actully now owns a winery near me, Carmody-McKnight.

How can you tell the difference between a good wine and an average wine?

My favorite line is drinks all around. Carsini laughing at it. Carsini or donal pleasance is brilliant actor. Another remarkable act from him was in the great escape where he plants the needle across the room to show he is not turning blind .

I would watch an entire show of Columbo just being friendly and sociable with people, no murder involved.

I get the same feel from this guy that I get from the passionate chefs and artists I've met in real life. Really great acting here. Also how Columbo almost looks disappointed to find his suspicions confirmed by his wife's info.
