Great poor man's tutorial. Excellent tips, especially for saving all of the old lock parts and using those. I have lots of old locks around the house and might be able to rekey at will. Thank you!

Great video for no special tools but I highly recommend using something (drill bit, sharpie/marker, socket, wood dowel, battery, or whatever appropriate size cylindrical object you have) as a plug follower. It makes the job soooo much easier and you avoid losing the top pins and springs during the reinstallation when they inevitably slip from under your screwdriver. Losing just one spring or top pin will turn a pleasant, simple, and short I can do that myself task into an extended nightmare that'll make you wish you never took on doing the task yourself.

A follower plug to hold on the top pins when removing the cylinder make the job so much easier.

So cool no special tools and old pins from old locks. Great video! Very impressive, short and sweet. So, I just did this as I
Moved into a home with 18 locks and I don’t want to carry 18 keys. All of them were Schlage type, master also worked with one key before but I upgraded the overall door lock to digital entry, fob and key locks Schlage type key. Since all of them had used one key before. I took out the pins from the old locks and put those pins in a different order to the new cylinders. So that one key still worked across all of them. Thus, I did it just like this video without having to buy anything and with the few locks that were not previously on one key I used a dremel like he explained to make a bigger pin fit. This project was much fun, like a puzzle, after I did it. 💪. Thank you 🙏 so much. I have doggie bags and used that plastic roll inside to use as follow through tool, so I would retain the springs, but when some springs and top pins came out, because of this video I was able to reinsert without feeling like I totally screwed it up, as I knew I could do it with the knowledge from this video.

Let me go grab my spare pins I’ve accumulated over the past 50 years of my life.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I consider myself very handy but you helped me decide that this is not something I want to attempt and it’s just easier for me to delegate this to a locksmith. And hey, I think of it as helping the economy. However, why don’t the locks already just have those anti-pick pins in there?

Thank you so much! I’ve never done anything like this before but your video was easy to follow and allowed me to change a deadbolt and rekey it to match my other doors. I’m sure you saved me quite a bit of 🤑 Thanks again!

Wow thank you! I need to replace a deadbolt but I want to keep the old key. So I'm going to just pull the pins from the old deadbolt and put them in the new one. Thank you! I feel confident enough to do it myself now

If you can find a piece of tubing or the smooth end of a drill bit (the part that goes into the drill chuck) that's exactly the same diameter as the plug, you can push out the plug so the driver pins and springs don't fall out. It'll save you a lot of work.

That was really interesting, now I know how a lock works. It actually looks fairly easy to do as well, thanks again.

I'm curious why you didnt use a core follower???
You shouldnt NEED to remove the upper pins and springs, they are held in place ith a core follower, I used a wood dowel that happened to be the same diameter as the core and pushed it thru as I pulled the core out and replaced the bottom pins and re-inserted it.
Some locks you CANT remove the top pin holder to insert the top pins and springs that way, but tediously trying to work all the springs and top pins back in is make-work.
The only time you should need to do it the way shown is if you fumble and drop the core or the like and everything falls out.

Okay, got it. All you need is to open a factory for those little bars.

Using the core as a follower is genius.

A quick question I couldn’t find an answer to on the Schlage website. I am hoping to rekey a Schlage encode, smart deadbolt and a Schlage B 60N deadbolt to use this same key.

Is the five pin cylinder on the Encode deadbolt the same or similar to the five pin cylinder used in the B60N deadbolt?

Would they use the same pins if I bought a rekey kit online to rekey these cylinders?

A vendor on eBay is telling me they use different pins, but he doesn’t sound that sure of himself.

Many thanks for your help.

Would this be the same procedure for the schlage keypad deadbolts.
I can rekey auto door locks and after watching your video seems home deadbolts are easier because the spring and tumblers are larger.
My question is would this be the same procedure for a schlage keypad deadbolt or rather are keypad deadbolts designed the dame . Thanks for the informative video.
