3 wood vs 3 hybrid - Differences Between 3 Wood and 3 Hybrid

The 3-wood has a larger head (175-190cc) than the 3-hybrid (95-110cc). The 3-wood uses a shallow face and wide sole, while the hybrid combines iron and wood characteristics with a deeper face and narrower sole.

3-woods feature 15-18 degrees of loft and 43-inch shafts. They produce a lower, penetrating ball flight with less spin than hybrids. The shallow face works best with sweeping contact, making the 3-wood more challenging to hit off tight lies.

3-hybrids have 19-21 degrees of loft and 40-41 inch shafts. Their design allows for steeper attack angles like an iron. The shorter shaft and higher loft create more spin and a steeper landing angle. This makes hybrids more effective from rough and poor lies.

Both clubs can reach 220-240 yards for skilled players. The 3-wood generates more roll due to lower spin, while hybrids carry further with less roll-out. Hybrids produce more consistent distances due to their forgiving design.

3-woods excel in firm conditions and from the tee. Their lower trajectory helps in wind. Hybrids perform better in soft conditions and rough. Their higher launch aids stopping power on greens.

The 3-hybrid has largely replaced long irons for most golfers due to its forgiveness. Many players now carry both 3-wood and 3-hybrid, using them for different situations. The 3-wood costs $20-50 more on average than comparable hybrids.

8 handicap and the longest club in the bag after my 10* driver is a 19* 3 hybrid. I’ve used a number of different fairway woods in my bag at different points but I find the game more enjoyable when I leave them at home and rely on a versatile hybrid. I hit the 3 hybrid about 230 with MUCH more consistent results than the 220-260 and wide dispersion I get with a fairway wood

Love your videos Matt!! I'm 52 (been playing since I was 13) I'm a 15 handicap, I swing in the mid-90s (I have lost quite a bit of swing speed over the years) I carry Driver, HL3 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 Hybrid, 6-9 iron w/AW, GW & SW. I only hit the 3 wood for 2nd shots on par 5s. I carry the Driver 211 (rolls out 230ish) BUT I find I most fairways. 3 wood carries 200ish on good strikes and rolls out 215-220ish. I carry the 4 hybrid 185ish rolls a little over 190. I really don't have a gap with this configuration. I think replacing long irons w/hybrids was a good idea for me as I got older. When I was in my 20's I could tee off w/1 iron or 2 iron, didn't really LEARN how to control a driver until I was 30. BUT as we age, I think setting our ego aside and accepting that we need to adjust our equipment will lead to more fun and lower scores!! Thanks :)

Ditched my standard 3 wood a long time ago...

Instead i installed a 15 degree callaway 3wood head to a 5 wood shaft and adjusted the loft to 17 degrees, .

Can hit it longer than the driver

I wish I could swing the golf clubs like Matt .. Very smooth and effortless.

I ditched both in favour of a 5 wood. Much easier to deal with even though I have a high swing speed. Tested them all

I use a 16° 3 wood and a 20° 4 hybrid
Stock carry yardage on the 3 wood is a little over 200 and the 4 hybrid is around 180

Weirdly, my 3W (15*) launches significantly higher than my 3H (19*). I think because of the very shallow face, the mass of the 3W (Cobra Kai) club head is below the equator. Also, my 3H (Jack Nicholson) has a slight offset which makes it feel like I am covering the ball more, like in a punch shot. I tend to hit low trajectory overall so I really appreciate how this particular 3W gives me a long club with good carry distance.

I chopped my 3 wood to the length of a 5 wood when I ordered it from Callaway.. Money.

For those of us who like older school setups, I'd like to see 1 Iron vs 5 Wood vs 2/3 Hybrid. Also, 13° 3W vs mini driver.

I have found that 1 Irons are far easier to hit than their reputation, unlike 3 Woods off the deck.

I’ve always thought they hybrid was meant to be used in the rough and the 3/5wood in the fairway. No idea where I got that from but the more you learn!
