FWIW, as I understand Turbocharging system operation:
A Turbocharger does increase back pressure in the exhaust system, so the boost generated in the intake system is not exactly some kind of _'free lunch'_ energy gain.

However, when the exhaust valve in a cylinder opens, a brief pulse or spike of pressure exists in the exhauat manifold. This pulse/spike has enough _'umph'_ to help drive the turbine in the Turbo and supply a net power increase.

Eventually they just decided to use engines entirely powered by turbines which led to turboprops and turbofans/turboimpellers.

Incomplete info .... the main difference is the wast gates in SP and TC you did NOT mentioned ...the waste gate are responsible to direct more exhaust gases to turbines thus More air to the engine through compressor in TC
