MacBook Pro M3 Pro - The Good and the Bad...

The M3 MacBook Pro is finally here with a new space black color and a brighter display, but all of the focus is really on the chips because the new M3 chip is Apple's first 3 nanometer chip for their computers and it should be faster... however it may not be faster in all regards.

Thank you for being the first person to both make a video about the m3 pro chip, as well as discuss in detail the differences between the *two* versions of it, providing all the relevant benchmarks I wanted to see for both. The only factors left in making my decision now is battery life, and between 14" and 16".

Every Macbook I've owned before the M-range was always eating up CPU doing practically nothing, cooking the system. I'm now enjoying have a laptop (M3 Pro) that actually seems to function like you'd expect any basic laptop to do when doing fairly simple (non-intensive) tasks.

Yeah you sold me on the m3 pro! This video was exactly what I needed to see! Everyone showing the m3 max. I never had a MacBook ever 🔥🔥

This is the video I was looking for. Few focus on the M3 Pro chip, or it gets easily dismissed. But you took the time to show its good points. I think my mind was already made, and I do not need a more powerful machine, but I am now more comfortable with my choice :)

Coming from an Intel MacBook Pro, the difference will be amazing.

Thanks for reviewing the M3 Pro as it was the one I was most interested in in terms of performance compared to the previous one. I thought MaxTech was going to cover these specs combos but everyone seems to be reviewing the M3 Max only which is way too expensive for me - thanks again! :)

Criticism: I didn't like the bar charts, sorry. They are not linear and do not show the actual number and percentage on the graph. It's so easy to improve that I had to comment on it.

Long as they're in stock I think a Refurb 14" M2 Pro (10CPU/16GPU) makes more sense than the base M3 14", especially after you spec it with 16GB RAM. Base M3 Pro seems solid though.

Thanks for the video. I'm upgrading from a 2017 Intel MacBook Air. The M3 Pro is exactly what I need to edit videos and photos and play some games.

Great video as always Greg! My thoughts exactly! Initially ordered the M3 version and upgraded the RAM to 16GB until I realized from your initial video that it was only $200 to get all the benefits of M3 Pro, more than double the RAM of the base model, better processor, extra thunderbolt port, space black color, ability to drive 2 external displays, better thermals. Ended up canceling my order and getting the base M3 Pro and am currently typing this on that device, super happy with my purchase! Thank you once again for your informative videos! Definitely saved me from buying the wrong device!

Thank you, I haven't seen many cover this base level M3 Pro MBP. Originally I was going to buy a M3 MBP, but after adding more ram, being so close to the M3 Pro MBP ($200), seemed like a no brainer for all you gain. However, not seeing any early benchmarks, I was worried how a binned chip would do. This model still seems like the sweet spot in my opinion. If that M3 MBP came with 16 gigs of ram stock, would be a harder sell.

Really looking forward to feedback on the M3 Pro chips on the MacBook Pro. Typing this from the 16" MacBook Pro with M3 Pro 12CPU 18GPU 18RAM 512SSD that I picked up a few hours ago!

Best comparison of base M3 Pro (11/14) and upgraded M3 Pro (12/18)! Needed this very video to make a decision. Gonna go for the base as it’s my first MBP (figured I probably wouldn’t need the upgraded one). Thank you so much!!! Liked!! 👍🏻

I have been seeing used refurbished MACBOOK PRO M1 Max fully maxed out for around $2500. Those originally went for around $7, 000. I would almost think that would be a hard proposition to miss especially after watching your videos.

Thank you Greg! I opted for the MBP 14 base but upgraded the storage to 1TB. Hoping to keep this device around for awhile!

I need more than 8GB of ram, not sure I need a pro-pro MacBook, but I’d put up the extra $200 for sure. The loss of on battery time? I’m usually plugged in. Extra fan? I’m not a fan of fans, coming from a M1 MBA. The extra port? I current don’t have any peripheral plugged in while using and if/when I do, I think 2 would be enough. I’d use the HDMI for an external monitor, no need for 2 external monitors. Not interested in black, although I haven’t seen it in person yet. My MBA is space gray and I’d rather have silver. So yeah, there I am buying a pro pro because I’m saying, for $200 more why not. Good job Apple. lol. My head tells me to wit to see what the M3 MBA presents…but, I hate waiting.

I think you should do a M3 Pro vs a M1 Pro because most people didn't upgrade from M1 Pro to M2 Pro, however they are considering to upgrade now as the gap is bigger.

Got the same model for 1699, can't beat the performance at that price point

I don't think it's negative at all to see this as what it is. A decision by marketing to reposition the M3 Pro chip by effectively degrading its capability and making the jump to a much more powerful and expensive Max chip more appealing to a larger number of customers in the M3 generation. I say it's not negative, because that's clearly what they have done. It's another example of Apple selling up its customers. Just the same as they have done with the base 14" Pro, where if you even think of upgrading anything on it, you might as well move up to the Pro chip. Apple have mastered the art of the up sell. Its the most innovative thing they do these days unfortunately and it overshadows some amazing hardware.
