Whiting of tongue is usually present when there is a buildup of the coating of bacteria or debris on the surface of the tongue. This can be due to mild dehydration, certain illnesses where we minimse the use of the tongue and the dryness of the mouth. Whitening of the tongue in term of certain patches or white spots also raises an alarm of certain chronic infections and inflammation. The most common condition is the oral thrush, which is caused by fungi, which is called as candida albicans which causes the whitening of the tongue. Certain infections like scarlet fever also causes red spots on the tongue. Inflammation and whitening of the tongue can occur also because of environmental irritants such as smoking or tobacco use which also causes bad breath in the mouth. Inflammation in the tongue also causes glossitis. Some white patches on the tongue which are also known as leukoplakia, can be precancerous lesions. Geographic tongue is also very common condition which causes red patches with very wide border. They are basically caused with a loss of papillae on the tongue surface.
