I feel the same way. I switched from CS to civil engineering for that reason. The career aspect of CS is the part that I care least about. I just love having it as a tool for solving problems!

Math has the same level of self-studyability. Something like mechanical engineering and a bit of electrical engineering can benifit from on -campus workshops. Honestly though, most things can be self studied, its just that college is a learning accelerant (given that you put work in).

There are plenty of hard cs classes and things that you learn way faster in class though. Hashmaps are normally only taught in a first semester intro data structures class (given AP CSA) that has a secondary purpose of just warming you up to pump out documented well writen code.

Depending on what your degree plan looks like, with CS, you can get a fun mix of theoretical cs / math stuff and low level stuff to live close to the hardware-software boundary, staying mostly on the software side while, but saving yourself from web dev.

Doing a math double major is cool though. If you dont care about proofs, skipping the math double and doing EE double could be cool too.

The good news is that CS is so close to fields like Computer engineering or electrical engineering that if someone decided CS was not for them after all. They could go for a masters in EE/CompE with very little catching up to do
