It's disturbing that people thought it was perfectly justified to do this to human beings. How disgusting!

Such a dark chapter in medical history. The horror of this still reverberates to this day.

So many people who knew this was inhuman and yet still practiced such vile things or didn't blink an eye to stop or question it Smh... failure all around. 💔

What’s even worst is some never heard of this. My grandfather taught me well. He was from Alabama & spoke about this a few times.

They could have treated them from 1941 after, the fact they chose not to, while knowing full well they were letting it spread and kill, shows how they really felt about their subjects 😢

When I worked in a hospital I had to draw blood from a syphilis patient. Unfortunately he was in advanced stage and was delirious, going between regressing and being really sweet and being abusive and saying sexist slurs... it took me a while to get him to chill out and be still enough so i could draw the sample. He started cussing me out and insisting that i was part of the government testing him. I thought about how sick he was to be this paranoid but now I wonder how much of this paranoia was totally justified. I cant imagine the pain and fear he must have felt from the syphilis deterioration combined with any knowledge he mightve had of this study.

What's really sad is this wasn't that long ago

Cover Canadian residential schools. Your channel can help the indigenous stories that NEED to be heard.

Then cover the Chinese leader during/after Ww2

I'm often overwhelmed with the acts human beings commit on each other. There is no end to the misery we bring to ourselves. This, like many other terrible acts in history, NEEDS to be remembered... but they must also be LEARNED FROM. I'm glad the government formally apologized. It won't wipe it away, but hopefully, it brings the families some peace.

thank you for covering the process of bringing the study to light - it's so often ignored.

WTF??!!! Appalling doesn't even begin to describe it. Surprising they didn't care about the subjects. Oh wait, they were black people so well ya know. 😡 This story just kept getting worse and still worse.
Jiles this was a very impressive piece. So well done. I knew you would be great at other subjects. This could be sold to other outlets. Awhile back I watched one episode of Somewhere Sinister. Just not my cup of tea. But this title intrigued me so I tried again and I am so glad I did. This was one of the best things I have watched in quite some time. I hope you will look into more stories of injustice, wrong doing etc to give us a better insight into things we should know about. THANKS.

And this was not the only example of what was done to Black people in the U.S., under the umbrella of "science." J. Marion Sims, the so-called father of gynecology, thought Black women felt less pain than white women and operated on them without anesthesia.

The thought of being barred from treatment knowing you are sick... Good God.

Always a good day when it's a Sinister day!!
But this topic is seriously dark. Humans can really be horrible! You might even say, Monsters!

Jiles, I think you are one of the few reporters of the Tuskegee study that has mentioned the effect beyond the men. What it did to their wives and partners and to children in the community.

Jiles,

I'm so happy this series is back.
I find this series more disturbing than, 'This is Monsters'. Maybe because legal abuse / murder is more unexpected.

Thanks for all your hard work

this is such a good episode. You should do more "sinister" episodes about horrible things beyond murders. I mean this was murder, but not in the "true crime" sense. Even Civil War POW camps, for example.

A few years ago I watched the full documentary about this and was horrified. Thank you for bringing this to a more public notice. Those men suffered horrifically from the symptoms, and then unknowingly passed them on to their families. Not condoning anyone. But…l could say more but it will take too long 😮
