Flite Test - Mosquito - REVIEW

Put away your deep woods bug spray, this is one mosquito that you'll want buzzing around you at the flying field. This week the Joshes review the HobbyKing Mosquito. They give a brief indoor description, with a tip for those who have rough fields. They quickly head outside to do an in air demonstration. Josh Scott is NOT ready for this plane. Josh Bixler explains the nuances of flying this plane while taking it around the field in some very scale pattern flights. If you're thinking about picking up this twin engine aircraft, you'll want to watch this video first!

The B-17 Flying Fortress had a max bomb load of 4, 800 pounds. The dedicated bomber version of the Mosquito carried a max load of 2, 000 pounds.

At first the humor between you two turned me off, but now, it's really grown on me!. Solid reviews flitetest.

Cheers.

At our old flying field, we had a gravel strip, but one of the guys got some used conveyor belt material from a local parts distributor - something like that is great for just laying down on top of the gravel, since it's pretty heavy and will hold itself in place, and smoothes the surface out nicely for more sensitive models.

Great review as normal guys!!
I've improved my landing strips on my gravel driveway with a load of stone dust. Even when the stone dust gets bumpy its easy to rake and pack for an awesome strip.
I made a putting green for my Dads cottage a few years ago it's the sweetest surface ever for landing on. I'm planing on building myself one this summer.

Have always admired Geoffrey De Havilland for his wonderful design that he came up with.  It did not take away precious aluminum from the aviation industries yet, provided a bomber, recon, and radio platform that outperformed all others in and out of her class.  Yes, she carried a bomb load bigger than a B-17.  Don't know why we didn't get the license and build her in huge quantities.... I guess we were just envious Americans.  But to the Brits, a credit to their service in WWII.  Nice flying Josh!  I almost thought you lost it at the end... yes she lands quick and heavy but you pulled it off!  Watched Killer Planes do the same demo and Steve smacked the gear pretty good on a nice tarmac.  Cheerio!!!

As an apprentice in the aircraft factory where these were built I used to go and look at the real aircraft in the flight test hangar. Was a beauty.

The Mustang WAS a British aircraft. It was designed as an export fighter and they were the original users. They figured out that the engine was a dog and stuck in a Spitfire engine. The Packard is a licence built Merlin.

The Mosquito was arguably the best all round aircraft of WWII. It could carry a 4, 000lb bomb load (typical B-17 load) over the same range as a B-17 but 100mph faster with only 2 crew. It was a fighter, night fighter, torpedo bomber, Reconnaissance aircraft capable of 440mph and fighter versions were armed with 4 20mm cannon, 4 machine guns and up to 8 rockets.

My favourite of all the model planes I built when I was a kid. And let's not forget that the Mosquito proved to be faster than the Spitfire, even before it received uprated engines! They also used a ''flaperon' effect to achieve steeper approaches.

Thanks for the review. Your comments about the aircraft build and flying technique are right on the money. Good work.

The plane itself looks really nice but it's really limited to just doing circles around. Hard to do rolls, no loops or acrobatics, it looks slow and looks like it burns through batteries easily because of the weight. It does seem like a fun one to land but maybe unforgiving.

Josh, your comment about the Mustang not being a British airplane needs qualification. In terms of it being an outstanding fighter, it is more British than American. Even the name. That Mosquito better not lose power in flight or it would drop like a rock. Intermediate flyer indeed! Great vid!
