Flite Test - REVIEW
HK-500CMT 3D Electric Helicopter
A Hobby King sponsored segment.

Flite Test heli pilot, John Coyle puts the HK-500CMT 3D to the test! This episode is filled with high expectations, drama, and cold weather. The HK-500CMT 3D is a low cost Align compatible RC heli that has a lot to offer. But what happens when we push it hard?

@ovaross We didn't have time to be as thorough as we wanted. Stay tuned for a follow-up on this review.

@flitetest

Let me start with this: I have watched all your videos, and love what you guys do. Flitetest is a unique entity in the space of RC, quality that is a level of magnitude higher than anyone else out there. I always look forward to new videos!

Guys, well done on the videos, they are top quality! You should do some reviews on Parkzone and Hobbyzone planes as they are extremely popular, and personally i'd love to see a review of the T28 trojan and some ultra micros!
Keep the good work up!!! :)

@IvanBarb4 The follow up video features the belt drive.

@IgorFPV John flies hard. We'll do another segment trying out the belt drive to see if it can take the abuse.

Great video as always, but the only thing I came away with from this review is that the HK-500CMT is crap. I realize that HobbyKing is your sponsor so you cannot just come out and say that, but I really do appreciate that you kept the failures in the video so that I can make proper decisions

@flitetest It seemed like you guys never really found out what the problems were. Seemed like twice there was some kind of tail failure.
Was it really due to the loose mesh somewhere, and there being no backlash adjustment? Perhaps some gears were not true?

You guys should review the Hobby King "EPP-FPV 1.8M Ultra Strong" plane (needs a better name) with FPV equipment installed.

You have a dead pixel on your camera, close to the hobbyking logo :)

Do we have to have that racket going in the background of every video you make? Sometimes we can't hear what you say.

@flitetest TIL not to buy the HK-500. What does CMT stand for. Constantly maintaing torque tube?

@jimwolg
in my opinion it is .. had some trouble with other plastic gears (quality plastic RC CAR gears) that stripped so easy in cold weather .. if that quality plastic gears stripped when i just braked the car a bit then this - not so quality - gears may be really affected by the cold ..
another thing surely is that on nearly every take-off the tail blades touched the ground and this is really bad for Torque Tube tails .. the belt can handle this much better ..

@Flyboy258 I should of pointed out my reason for recommending this heli for beginners better.... sorry for that. I fly a blade 400, before that a CP Pro. Both helis did not fly well out of the box. THe cp pro had a bad tail motor and a bad internal gyro, it was not stable and the tail would kick out everytime I changed collective. The blade 400 is a GREAT heli.... after the gyro and tail servo is replaced.

@joshuamelvin The HK 500 is far more stable and shows a great deal more potential than both the other helis. I do wish we would of started with the belt drive tail first, but we did want to show all the ups and downs (pun intended) of the product. Every heli needs tweaked and dialed in. THe HK 500 is very affordable, and with the low cost, you can afford to upgrade and fix the problems. I would consider the review to be dishonest if we did not show the failures.

A friend of mine had nothing but trouble with this product straight out of the box. Save your money, unless you like working on it and spending money.
