🎤 For a recent episode of A Whole New Level, Swaranjit Bhasin, MD, a radiologist and @drcaseyskitchen (Casey Means, MD,) a Levels advisor, talked diet and why it doesn’t matter whether you’re keto, vegan, or otherwise. If you follow three principles, you’ll help reduce your risk for cancer and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And you’ll likely lose weight if that’s your goal.
There are two main forms of fatty liver disease:
- One form is alcohol induced: only 5% of the population in the U.S. has this form.
- The other is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): 1 in 3 adults has nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and 1 in 10 kids have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
- The root cause is insulin resistance.
Sugar and insulin resistance drive cancer:
- For PET-CT scans, radiologists inject a small amount of radioactive glucose into a patient.
- Cells throughout the body absorb sugar.
- However, cancer cells tend to uptake more glucose than healthy cells.
- For this reason, PET-CT scans can help identify where cancer might be in the body.
- “This shows that cancer really loves sugar,” Dr. Bhasin says. “If you’re insulin resistant, you’re going to have more glucose circulating in your body.”
✅ What simple diet rules can you follow to help reduce insulin resistance and inflammation and to help prevent disease?
- Avoid processed seed and vegetable oils.
- Eat a diet low in processed carbs and sugars and incorporate healthy sources of fat.
- Practice intermittent fasting.
