It seems people are missing the point. He's not hung-up on the lights; he's using that conversation as an example of a larger issue- the communication challenges he's having with Lily. Yes he should learn the local language, if nothing else, so he can navigate society there. But as far as Lily and Josh talking with each other, Lily is already 50-75% fluent in English. Practically speaking, it would be easier for her to improve her English slightly for them to be able to communicate than for him to learn a new language, ground up.

He is asking her why are the lights flashing but she cant explain this in English and he doesnt speak mandarin. So they are now both exhausted by it all as its dawned on them that the relationship maybe over due to language barriers. This is so obvious but neither of them can even explain this in rher native languages.

I think this argument about white flashes is from the show's producers to create drama or he is on a spectrum or he is ignorant and doesn't know anything about China and hasn't researched it before.

He is just using/looking for reasons so when he leaves he needs some reasons. He is in it for a vacation and the show. He wants her to pay for everything and say nothing about it. He sold his house and put that money in the bank, he didn't look for a job in China when he was in america, there are a lot of Jobs he could do overseas. He could work for a callcenter and it does not matter where you are located. He just wants to live rent free, coast free, and hear nothing about money. He is a grownup boy. After she pays for the house and everything he starts some fight or start complaining about some light like a litlle boy, and start acting like she is in the wrong and hurt his feelings, she is hurt for having a bum as a boyfriend that doesn't show her love and she can't talk about the things that are on her mind because talking about cost and money will hurt his feelings. if you move to another country, learn the language or dont complain about it. She puts in 95% and he is bringing 5%.
