Japan is an interesting mixture of contradictions. Innovative and futuristic, yet traditional and restrictive. I think that's why it's so fascinating to many people outside the culture like myself.

At its heart (and in my non educated POV), Japan is a collectivist society. So it is easier to move together if everyone is a known property. If one person knows it is wrong and they are not the one whose place it is to be in charge, they would rather all be wrong together then let that other person move against the whole.

It is an emergency mentality over layered with Confucianism. 12 people can lift the front of a car but if one person is wanting to talk about how to do it, it doesn’t get done even if the technique is better!

It lets them as a group act more powerfully but it can lead to individual suffering (in silence) if they are against things. Bad idea can’t be easily confronted and hard for individuals and good ideas held by the few to grow.

This can be totally wrong (I am a black guy in the US) but that is my take on what they have there. I love to hear better ideas if people disagree.

Great take. I ask if you meet these “other people’s expectation, ” what do the other people get out of it? If you blend in, what is gained by these “other people?” Does standing out offend, insult, harm… these other people? It sounds like control. A loss of control if one member doesn’t want to conform to these rules. Control and power as a group, powerless as an individual. Some sort of viscous circle where even the individuals in the group are individually powerless. They can’t be free to be. They can be controlled to conform. Talk about self policing…

Its so weird cause Japan seems like a fever dream, a cacophony of creativity and extravaganza (from what I've seen in media)

Conformity towards creativity just seems unnecessary as long as it not the slippery slope aspect.

That is the same realization I had 15 years ago: Japanese people being hold back because society pressure. It's such waste of good, new, innovative and incredible ideas that never see the light of day.

They do this in the USA but it can be worse. If you go against whatever mentality that is the norm, (like being in a gang or politics, ) you get isolated and/or worse.

“If you not a side you’re against us, ” attitude

I think the same mindset exists in the US.

There are lots of suicides in Japan. They go to a forest for that. Really, so strange.

So, how come they are so advanced, especially in technology?!!! I think you should dig deeper more on your research before you judge the Japanese People!!! I feel that there are a lot more missing in your report!!!

Stay clear of the villagers; they will never seek improvement or evolve. Thats why they are behind, compared to advanced, modern civilizations.

I completely disagree. I think it's the complete opposite. I've been here for over 25 years and I think people have the opportunity to strive to be different. That's why there are many successful young adults. To call this a 'culture' because of a single experience is selfish and obnoxious. I think it just depends on the situation of each individual.
