The Vauxhall Astra was one of the UK’s bestselling cars in 2017 and it’s not hard to see why. Cheap, decent to drive, well-equipped and practical, the Astra is more than capable of giving fierce rivals, such as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, a serious run for their money.

My mum had a 2012 facelifted Vauxhall Astra from 2014 to 2018 and I really loved it. It was practical, it was comfy and it was super beautiful. In fact the facelifted previous generation Vauxhall Astra is the most beautiful car ever in my opinion, which is something that isn’t normally said about a Vauxhall.

I can not agree with the dull image of the previous gen astra. My wife owns a 110hp diesel in top trim. On country roads it feels surprisingly engaging. The suspension is a very good compromise of sport and comfort. The front end grip is really good. As reference I own a 200hp 1 series with tweaked suspension alignment and wide, square tire setup. Also I had access to many other cars. From my point of view the astra was heavy but not as bad as many think. Luckily the new one is more on the light side ^^

I absolutely loved my Astra estate. It was the 1998 model.Drove like it was part of me, I can't say that about any other car.

I drive the previous generation Astra and I really like it. In three years of ownership the only niggle is how the main dealer doubled the service price for the 4th service, quite simply a con to encourage upgrading. I went to an independent garage instead, when will dealers learn!?

Less room in the boot than the golf. That's because it is a nice looking car, unlike the boxy golf.
