We'll admit it – the Vauxhall Astra's never been the sexiest thing on four wheels, but the latest generation rips up the rulebook with futuristic design, and the promise that it's better to drive than ever. But is it actually a good second-hand buy? Join Rebecca Jackson for an in-depth review of the latest Astra including a look at practicality, in-car tech, storage and – of course – how it drives. Would you have one over a VW Golf?

I tested one the GSi petrol. It handled well but needed more power . When I realised it ran its timing belt in oil I just walked away. Vauxhall will eventually have the same problems Ford has with the eco boom engines . Keep well clear

I am a victim (vaxhuall grandland) of this 1.2 puretech engine with wetbelt issues, and piston ring issues which use tons of oil.

Now chnaged to previous model astra k 1.4 150hp elite nav. Soo happy with it

Vauxhall hasn't existed as an original company for a long time. Its the name of Opel cars in Britain. Opel is owned by Stellantis (Peugeot-Fiat). So, you're talking about an Opel, a car designed outside the UK for the European market. Since its purchase by Peugeot, it's increasingly a Peugeot car. Vauxhall doesnt do anything except build the cars decided by Peugeot. It's a Peugeot under a different name.

They've been on sale for three years and I can honestly say I've seen no more than ten on the road - vastly overpriced for what they are !

I bought a new Vauxhall Monterey many moons ago, and I'll never buy another Vauxhall.
When the engine exploded after only 8, 000 miles they didn't want to know. The dealer actually returned the car with the engine in the boot. It took What Car, Auto Express and Cutting Edge to bring Vauxhall to the table.
