Introducing the all-new Vauxhall or Opel Astra!

Mat’s got his hands on Vauxhall’s/Opel's new family-friendly hatchback and he’s about to see if it has what it takes to compete with competitors such as the Peugeot 308!

For starters, it more than looks the part! The new Astra rolls up with a totally redesigned bumper and grille, coupled with a nice crease in the bonnet to give it a more sporty look. Around the back, there’s a smart integrated light design along with a bootlip spoiler. It’s also possible to get a contrasting roof colour with certain trims!

On the inside, the Astra is pretty smart, although the design doesn’t live up to the quality of the exterior. The build quality is pretty solid, and thankfully it comes with a number of physical buttons for the climate control. It’s possible to get a large infotainment screen, too, although the system isn’t exactly the best. Thankfully though it does come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto!

There are a number of petrol and diesel engines to choose from, along with a plug-in hybrid! The latter delivers the most power, with a 1.6-litre petrol engine and electric motor combining to deliver 180hp.

The range kicks off from around £24,000, but is it worth it? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!

Which is best - Vauxhall Astra or VW Golf? VOTE BELOW!

The fact that it has physical buttons in the interior instead of forcing EVERYTHING on to a stupid screen, makes this a hands down winner over the Golf - no question.

2010 people: buttons are so boring
2015 OEMs: here's a touchscreen
2020 people: buttons are the best

Opel/Vauxhall should be proud. The Astra has a deep history going back nearly 4 decades

Im getting the old Vauxhall Astra (1980s), Nova, Carlton and Omega vibes from this car. Really liking it.

I have to give it to Opel/Vauxhall - today on the Autobahn, I've passed one and then they passed me. I really didn't think at all that that was an Opel, looked way too stylish and eye-catching!
When they passed me, I really was like "Ha... that's a ... wait, that's an Astra? ... Alright (insert approving, slow head nodding)"

The infotainment system in this Astra is called the Pure Panel, which was only supposed to be offered on the base trim. Mid and high spec trim were supposed to come with the Pure Panel Pro, which is probably the version Matt refers to. The Pure Panel Pro doesn't have the piano black plastics, but a nice glass panel. However, the production of the Pure Panel Pro had to be moved from Ukraine to (if I remember it correctly), India, which wasn't ready in time. That's the reason why all models currently come with the regular Pure Panel, and the Pure Panel Pro has been removed from the pricing list.

Also, funny to see how "White Jade" is the standard colour for the Vauxhall version. The Opel version offers the colour of the car in this video, "Amber Yellow", as standard, and white is an optional extra.

A really good update for the Astra, I think this is going to be as good for Vauxhall and be a big seller just like the updated corsa has been.

Finally somebody mentioned the vibrations in 1.2 and automatic. Really hated my 2017 peugeot 308 for that, car drove like something was broken all the time.

I think it's way better looking than the golf and has physical buttons too. I actually think it looks better than the 308 too. Well done vauxhall. Too bloody expensive though.

If there was a *Astra R* version of this like the Golf this would be incredible. It already looks the part. Decent car

They look fantastic in that colour! A really brave move, to match the highly competitive styling for a change. The last two generations have kinda just existed without being anything to get worked up about. Even the interior finally looks contemporary with its peers, apart from that tightwad screen surround. I'd hope buyer feedback sees them switch to the single panel for the top ICE/Hybrid models, too.

Absolutely love the design, Opel really nailed it with this one. Shame it's so overpriced.

Everything Vauxhall’s been coming out with lately has looked fantastic ever since PSA bought them over. It’s like a completely different car compared to the old one…

Super happy to see physical controls for HVAC. Nice car looks fun. Keep up the good work.

Top marks for the exterior! One of the best looking new hatchbacks in my opinion, the styling is not too much and not too little and that black Chevrolet style grill suits it perfectly. They could’ve done a lot better inside though, there’s no need for so many screens. I don’t get that with cars these days, there should just be one for infotainment and one for the dials (or even just traditional dials would be good 😅). It’s far too basic inside it almost looks empty, yet again same with most new cars these days. If they did a VXR, I would hands down have this over a Golf R

Astra has always have that cute look over these years. Been loving Astra design since the H series up until the K it’s always look good to me. But this one, looks like a grown up and aggressive with all the lines and serious fascia. I actually quite like it even the design is totally different from previous Astras.

The reason for the big price bump in comparison to the old model is that there are currently only the higher trims available due to the shortage of supplies in the car industry.
