To clarify for those in the comments, Mewtwo’s Origin WAS included in the original theatrical and home video release for Mewtwo Strikes Back. However, all of Amber’s backstory was cut and herego, Dr. Fuji’s reasons for making Mewtwo. That’s why it’s called uncut on the DVD of Mewtwo Returns. I remember being very confused as a child when I first got the DVD and saw it say “uncut”. I remember thinking, “what could be so bad about this? Why is it uncut?” And then I remember thinking in the first few scenes (because it opens the exact same way with the bubbles and jungle and all) that this is the exact same thing we already got but then boy were my eyes opened 👀 quickly became my favorite thing. I wish Pokémon hadn’t strayed away from tackling darker tones and deeper topics. They’re easily the most memorable every time. That’s why the first three movies are regarded the way they are. The writer for them was constantly on drugs and drinking and had a thing for tackling deep topics

I remember in like 2nd or 3rd grade a kid had this uncut version and brought it to school for movie day. Now in my 20's I realize not everyone even knew this part of the story. Me and my husband were talking about scenes that made us cry. He said when ash was turned to stone, I said when the little girl died leaving mew all alone. He didn't know about this.

I disagree with you, because it perfectly shows the contrast between the kindness he was given from the little girl and the coldness from the rest of humanity. Highlighting the Goodness and Evil in humans. And also fulfills the ending, because mewtwo learns life is precious, and that not all humans are bad.

Such a shame they didn't originally included it during the theatrical release. If they didn't cut this, we definitely would understand Mewtwo's reasoning for his plot more.

did i miss something? you missed a crucial part - amber says to mewtwo that her father said something about tears giving life... and that's why when all the pokemon cried for pikachu at the end they were able to revive ash. as a child, i never really understood the ending until i saw the deleted scene

edit: OH! forgot to mention that the 3 starter pokemon were his childhood friends!!!! he probably revived them! no wonder they were so willing to back him up when fighting the trainers

Maybe not needed but it just makes Mewtwo's story all the better for it. It makes things more grounded in a sense and also all the more tragic. I am certain that both the prequel and the sequel contributed to why Mewtwo is so beloved.

His VA’s amazing performance and characterization was better than a Pokémon movie deserved

It’s an sin this has the opportunity twice to be added into the movie and both times failed This Origin for Mewtwo was such an huge development for his character would of been great for him to have small memories of Amber and her words come back to him making him into what he is right now defending other Pokémon.

Also in the Japanese version of Mewtwo Returns, when Mewtwo is in the lake recovering & after he sees Mew in his memory, he hears Amber ("Ai" in the Japan original) call back to him.
I remember nerding out about this on old websites of the day, like Mew2s Realm (it was the early internet)

Mewtwo Strikes Back was supposed to be written as the finale of the original series, but due to show’s popularity, the producers wanted the show to continue, so the movie was rewritten as — if I’m using the term correctly — a series plot filler.

The short should’ve been included in the original release, worldwide. It would’ve brought up a lot of tough questions for parents to answer, but it would’ve started discussion on the nature of life itself.
