The Amazing Character of Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is one of the best characters in Pokemon's anime.

In terms of Pokemon’s anime, many characters are fairly flat, generally acting as well established pillars of the show that has gone on for over 2 decades at this point. Even when the cast changes, it’s usually just passing these roles from old to new. However, outside the scope of the anime’s characters is the antagonist of the Pokemon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back - the story of Mewtwo, his character arc as a clone, and his hunt for purpose.

After watching the video feel free to leave any and all counter points in the comments below - I love a good discussion.

Mewtwo is the perfect tragic character. He's not evil, just....misunderstood. All he wants is a purpose. A reason for existing.

Pokémon has never reached this level of characterization ever since

Is it me or does Mewtwo have a LOT in common with Shadow the Hedgehog? Powerful lab experiment with tragic backstory (involving a nice young girl) who wanted to destroy humanity but eventually became sort of a hero with a very reserved and existencial personality...checks out.

One of the reasons why Mewtwo is my favourite pokemon. Not only is it a powerful psychic type pokemon (you guessed it, psychic is my favourite type), it also has deep lore and character development

I used to think it was odd how the humans were so horrified to see their Pokémon fighting the clones, in a world where battles are commonplace and never cause serious harm to the Pokémon. But a line of dialogue in the CGI remake, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, makes things a lot clearer.

Before the fight begins, Mewtwo says, "We don't need to use our moves" (or anything like that, I can't remember the exact quote), making it clear that this is not a Pokémon battle (a friendly competition akin to wrestling), but rather, a real fight to the death. This explains why the Pokémon are punching and biting each other instead of using Flamethrower, Hydro Pump etc.

Assuming the scientists where the only people within the building and all of them where with mewtwo. He would’ve still killed hundreds.

Mewtwo is quite interesting I wish he could have been explored more in a full length slightly more serious take like in X and Y.

Man the nuance of tears has me in tears. It makes Satoshi’s sacrifice even more meaningful because Satoshi sees Pokémon and humans as equal which is inferred by Ai when she said that humans are the only ones to cry when sad

I didn’t get into Pokémon until I was 14. Hooked by Go when that was big. I saw Pokémon The First Movie on a long car ride to a swim meet in Indianapolis. Couldn’t stop crying when Mewtwo gave his speech.

Facts: Mewtwo is genderless. But in the cartoons and the movies, Mewtwo is voiced by male and female voice actors.

This is why out of all the Pokémon movies, especially the first 3, this one takes it home. For the simple fact that it was a Pokémon movie but yet with a violent intro to the movie. Something that the cartoon didn't show and obviously the part with the little girl at the beginning when she starts to fade away and all that's left is mewtwo... that shit in least to me gets me everytime when i watch it.

This is why Mewtwo will always be my favorite legendary. He has an origin story befitting of a Pokemon that has truly terrifying power level

Wow I didn't even know that prologue existed! I still got the tragic character vibe from watching it the first time but the prologue would've been a welcomed addition.
