I used to bake a similar cake for a very popular local coffee shop. They sold out of it every week. I used crushed pineapple with the juice and a can of pie cherries, stir. Then sprinkle the box of dry yellow cake over that, a bag of sweetened shredded coconut sprinkled over that and then a cube of melted butter drizzled over the top. They called it Bob. You can call it Bob the Cake, I'm cool with it.

We did this in boy scouts, but we had a campfire and a cast iron Dutch oven. When you want a peach cobbler but don't have an oven or electricity.

I think it's good that there are things like this that allow a person who is just so goddamn tired but could really do with a serviceable peach cobbler to cheer themselves up can use. I approve of this cake. Not because I prefer the ultra-minimalist preparation, but because I think that anyone resorting to it probably just really needs something nice.

The one and only time I've had dump cake was at a summer camp. Our counselors threw everything into a pot and cooked it over a campfire until a few minutes after the butter was fully melted. Once it was cool enough to eat, the counselors gave each of us campers a spoon and told us to dig in. So it was me and several other kids crowded around this pot full of dump cake, going at it with spoons, just absolutely shoveling it into our mouths as fast as we could. 10/10 experience

Honestly my family has made dump-it cakes for decades but ours are a tad different. They use pie filling in cans, usually blueberries, but we’ve also used cherry and apple. The the yellow cake mix but with pineapple mixed in. Then pecan halves on top of the cake mix. Then the butter the same way you did in this video, cut into pieces and put in the oven. The effect is that the pecans toast themselves while the cake cooks and the butter runs down into the cake mix. The pineapple makes the fruit filling taste better some how. And like I said blueberry seems to be most everyone’s favorite in our family.

Remember you can always be extra and add some cinnamon and spices when you put the butter on top. More cinnamon tastes like love even when your heart is cold and bereft of life.
