Knitting - Faster Ribbing on Socks ('Flicking')

Fairly recently, I re-learned to knit. I am a "thrower" (yarn in right hand) and use to let go of my needle when I knitted. I came to realise how inefficient this was and worked at reducing all movements so I could knit quicker. I had to change my grip so that I could reach with my finger to wrap the yarn without letting go of the needle. It was really awkward to start with but I persevered. I'm still hoping to gain more speed but already this is so much more of an efficient way to knit, for me. It's particularly great for ribbing where you can move the yarn back and forth at the same time as you are knitting/purling the stitches. Much time can be saved this way.

Naïvely, I thought this was "my way" of knitting but then I found on YouTube that others knit like this and they call it "flicking".

I'm not perfect by any means but I do enjoy this new method of knitting so I hope you like it too, if you don't already knit this way, or that it might inspire someone to try something new and see if they can improve their speed too.

Great video, thank you! I love that I just see the technique I came to see without several minutes of chat to sit through at the start. It's just: here's the technique, and here it is slowed down. Perfect! And as I'm frustrated by how slow my ribbing is, I'm definitely going to practice like this!

Beautiful. I’m trying and trying but have trouble with my tension . Do you get a sore finger after a while? I sure do. Wish I had your capable hands!

Nice video. Easier to see in slow motion. Thanks. I have the knit stitching down pretty well, but the purl stitch is still very awkward for me. This helps.

I wish I could knit that fast. I’m a flicker too but my purl is way slower. I can’t hold my index finger that high like everyone else.
