OMG!!!!
I used to do text in SoftImage XSI as it had epic collision detection with bevels which meant no cleanup. Blender is very good due to its loop selection but it’s always a chore - this changes that! Thank you so much!

You can solidify your text without a modifier. It's in the Data panel (looks like an a in this situation), under Geometry, there is an extrude slider. Just saying.

But why is all that necessary? I never understood why text in blender has the crappy topology it does... all the other thing in the add menu come out with nice simple geomtry. But text is like a blind monk made the topology with the wrong side of a feather quill.
