Is Carbonated Water GOOD For Your TEETH?

Let's talk about what carbonated, seltzer, and sparkling water does to your teeth! Although it contains water... don't let it fool you that it's "good" for your teeth! Spoiler alert: tap water is always best! But, some carbonated waters aren't THAT bad.

Though sparkling waters are much better for your teeth than their carbonated soda counterparts, the best way to prevent cavities is to drink them in moderation. The more you drink any acidic liquid, the higher the risk of decay becomes. Make sure you choose sugar-free seltzer water so that you’re not adding in any sweeteners, which could eat away at your enamel. Is carbonated water bad for your teeth? Not in the way we normally think about it. If you feel the need to indulge in a soda with that burger or piece of pizza, then going with something like a La Croix or other seltzer water is a smart choice. Just remember to respect the pH levels and not drink them all day long!

Yes diet soda is very acidic...they add acid to balance the sweetness. It doesn't matter what the sweetener is, stevia monk fruit, etc...the problem is the acid

I've only been drinking tap water and milk since january 1st. No more soda, no more energy drinks and it feels so good. I know it probably wouldn't do any damage if i just had a can or two a week, but i've decided to just not drink it at all. My dentist fixed everything (9 fillings, 2 of them being RCT) and i don't wanna make it bad again, now that she's made everything good again.

I live in Germany. Mineral water is the most popular drink here. I barely know anyone who doesn't drink their water carbonated at least some if not all of the time. I literally NEVER heard of it being bad for teeth or inferior to tap until I came across English language sources. Not from any German dentist, hygienist, the people who come to school to give dental health education and so on. Who is correct? Is it downplayed here or played up over there, or a little bit of both? Who knows. But just thought I'd put it out there that the (dental) community hasn't reached that consensus across the pond.

Also, tap water is definitely NOT always best. Just saying that smacks of privilege. I know that you don't know what it's like in other countries (here, the regulations are much stricter when it comes to bottled water), but the tap water in many places in the US will literally make you sick and no filter in the world will make it okay to drink.

I’m not a fan of Seltzer, but I do enjoy drinking regular water! Also I drink diet soda but only once in a while.

I make my own filtered/unflavored/fizzy tap water using my soda stream. I guess that’s ok? Maybe I should invest in some pH strips… Thanks for all the helpful info! ❤️ 😁 🦷

What about carbonated wine? Like a spritzer? There's sugar in mine, but not as much as soda.

Hey Whitney, thanks for this informative video! Can you please make a video on Tooth Mousse, if they are good for people who have periodontal disease which is under good control (with great dental hygiene as well as regular dentist/hygienist cleans)? Since periodontal disease usually causes gum recession, teeth can be more sensitive right? So I am curious to know! I am asking because different dentists/periodontist have differing views LOL! I hope to hear your opinions! x

Thanks! Do we need to be concerned about the PH levels of the mouthwash we use? Are mouthwashes with hydrogen peroxide safe to use?

What about kombucha? Does it have the same effect as sparkling water. I do enjoy kombucha on occasion.

Drink tap water??? Shouldn't you filter it first or buy spring water or something? On that note, I'd like to know what you think about fluoride in tap water. From what I've heard, it is hydroflourosalicic acid (not sure if I even spelled that right) and not sodium fluoride or calcium fluoride like in toothpaste.
