'Rounding' Actually Makes Things Less Round! #shorts

This short is about how "rounding" numbers (to the nearest integer) actually results in things being less "round" in terms of how we usually consider roundness.

This short was filmed by Carlo Trappenberg.

Combo Class, taught by me (Domotro), is a crazy educational show where you can have fun learning rare things about math, science, language, and more! This is actually kind of my "bonus" channel for my livestreams, shorts, and extra content - make sure you're also subscribed to the main @ComboClass channel where my main episodes go!

This is like Reverse Breaking Bad, where a meth dealer becomes a high school teacher.

Plot twist: He's teaching raccoons about rounding numbers, and one of the raccoons uploaded this video to YouTube.

Better terms for "Rounding":💀💀
"Cornering"💀
"Shaping"💀
"Edging"☠

That whiteboard's lifespan is rounding down to it's end.

Honestly squaring would be a great term for it if it wasn’t already being used

The board fainted because of this shocking information.

A whiteboard with rounding sides, being used to talk about rounding gets flattened

That is correct, but rounding was named after the round number 0. When you're rounding, for example number 7 you round it to 10, and 2.6 is rounded on 3.0. when you round a number, you always get a number that ends with 0

Maybe the reason why it's called rounding is not from the term round directly, but from the term around, as in 2.4 is around 2 and 2.6 is around 3.

It seems to fall in line with a lot of stuff and might be why there's such an arbitrary division at 0.5. It might be because having math as a base 10 system, 0.5 happens to be the math equivalent of say 11:30, which people often say is around 12:00.

I didn't hear you offer any suggetsions, so I'm going to with "flattening" a number. It just requires a little bit of creative latitude to make it work in the up-direction. You could think of it like "junk was hanging off my number, so I smushed it back up to flatten it"

Its cause youre 'cutting corners'

If you take an arbitrary co-ordinate, then draw a circle of radius 1/2 centred at the coordinate, you find that for almost all co-ordinates, there is exactly one co-ordinate in the circle with integer co-ordinates. Choosing this co-ordinate in the circle is rounding both the x and y coordinate to the nearest integer...

Also remember that the interior of a one dimensional circle is an inequality of the form a < x < b, so it's quite apt as a name actually.

Whole numbers are considered "round" because they don't have a bunch of extra fractions (pieces) of 1. It wasn't meant for graphs, it's meant for the individual number.

I always thought of rounding as making the number less precise, thus less jagged.

it's a special case of quantizing which does sound more appropriate

Those whiteboards falling was a real roundabout way of getting your point across.
