For the invasions, you can invade and then just leave. It still counts. I think the quest is tied to simply using the item. The outcome of the invasion is irrelevant. I ended up invading the same person 3 times and just used the item to leave each time and that worked

An important thing to mention for the quest line. You don’t have to WIN the invasions. You just have to invade, win or lose 3 times.

For anyone who doesn’t want to pvp but still wants to do the invasions, just invade by tree sentinel and watch the players get rolled over and over

I feel like it's important to note that this is more "just a little way into the game". This is basically only doable late game since you have to kill Neill, which is not really feasible for the majority of early/mid game players. I don't have PS+ but I'm considering getting it just for this farm.

Please be reminded that this method reaching the areas after the lift or plateau would trigger location change for some NPCs. In other words you would miss some of the dialogues, gestures and items including spirit from those NPCs if you haven't done that prior to the walkthrough.

I play offline so this was a huge help to me. I ended up having to cheese the invader by having him jump off the cliff, but once he was out of the way it was smooth sailing. Thanks for sharing this solution.

Theres also a really easy small farm I just found in Caelid. You go to the watchtower just before the Impassable Bridge to Redmaynr Castle, climb the ladder and kill the two guards at the top, and turn around and watch the guards and the giant wolves fight eachother. You get all the runes as they kill eachother. Lol.

ADDITIONAL TIP: if you're having a beast of a time against Niall like I was, just double jump off the cliff by Shack of the Lofty and choose to respawn at the Stake of Marika. No Haligtree Medallions necessary. Search "Consecrated Snowfield Skip" for vids on youtube if you want more info.
Edit: They've patched the Shack skip but there's another one over by the Death Bird boss near Castle Sol

to make this more efficient use Ash of war Hoarfrost stomp to farm them, as for mage I tried Astel Meteor(meteor works too but astel has larger aoe? idk) it works fast but you won't hit everything and its up to you if you want to clean up the rest with shatter earth

Nice thing about not doing the invasions is not getting the red "evil" eyes. While you can turn the effect off, because you got them, you can no longer get any other "eye events" that change how your eyes look. For example, eating dragon hearts or using dragon attacks would get you nice glowing yellow dragon eyes with black sclera, but the red eyes from invading are apparently permanent and would prevent you from getting other eyes like the dragon eyes since they seem to have priority over all other eye changes the game could give you. So you either keep those red eyes or go to the mirror in fia's room at roundtable and go back to your regular normal eyes forever. I'm going with the long way for this reason.

Kind of sad this the only way to get runes, especially when the player population dies down in the next few years, and this becomes much harder
