Weird Foods That Ancient Egyptians Ate

Egypt, with its majestic pyramids, is among the top travel destinations today. But let's go back in time to see what Egyptians were fed to build these breathtaking pyramids. Due to the geographical location of Egypt, the Nile River flowed through the ancient city allowing for the farming of crops and livestock. Trade between countries also allowed Egyptians to enjoy a multi ethnic cuisine.

So, among all the ancient civilizations, Egyptians ate better than most did. But, this doesn't mean that all the food was finger-licking good.
Today at Nutty History we'll show you some pretty weird, or as some would say gross, food choices ancient Egyptians made.

When you haven't eaten anything for a few days, whilst working all of the time, you'll eat literally anything that fills your stomach!! None of these really shocked me, in all honesty.

Fermented herring is an old classic food here in my country. It does not smell good, but tastes good.

The fermented fish sounds similar to Swedish surstromming. I've had that several times.

Egyptians probably ate rodents because they loved cats and thought "if my cat eats it, I eat it".

Salt fermented fish is not the same as rotten fish!!
Fish sauce from Thailand and Vietnam are made of small fishes and plenty of salt left in the sun in big drums. Water + nutrients are extracted from the fish and put in bottles.
A delicious condiment for asian foods!
The ancient Romans were fond of it too.. It's called "garum" mostly produced in Spain from anchovies and salt..

I hunt tree rats, squirrels, and it’s dove season right now and I’ve eaten woods rats, the meat is very good.
A survival book I had in the 1970s pointed out all birds are eatable.
Worchestshire sauce is made from fermented fish.
Pepperoni and salami are both fermented meats

I’d only heard about dried n salted fish in egypt. Never heard of fermented fish before. Btw, many parts of the world actually eats dried/salted fish, but as a side-dish for the main dish, for example rice in malaysia. N it does taste good. Try it urself if u dont believe me

If you like Worcestershire sauce you have had fermented fish. Pigeon is good, I haven't tried rat or pelican yet or force fed duck but the wild duck I had was too greasy but that could have been caused by the way it was cooked. never knew people eat hedgehog

Many people today go dove hunting, & eat dove, along with many other birds, you can also order it in restaurants. I was raised by a forester who hunted, & fished as much as possible in Louisiana, so nothing could really revolt me. You should always try it a few times, prepared different ways before you permanently say no.

Salted fish such as herring or salmon is a traditional food in Russia. It's quite tasty. But it's not fermented, of course.

Pigeons are similar to doves… in Hawaii, there are doves everywhere. Apparently they are great roasted, although I never tried any.
