In Crimea there has been also an Italian community since 1.200 mostly composed by Genoese and Venetians. Today there is still the Genoese festival in Sudak. They stayed there peacefully, you can notice the Italian architecture from Feodosya to Yalta. But Stalin deported near all of them after WWII.

as a Crimean Tatar who read a lot of ancient books and videos on history, I can say that this is true, especially those atrocities against my people

Thank you. It's always a challenge to summarise complex histories that include multiple controversial/ still debated elements in such a short format, but you did a great job!

I have always been fascinated by the crimea. So much so that in 2009 I was looking at buying some land overlooking the sea of azov. It was cheap and the view was amazing. A polish friend of mind talked me out of it . I owe him big time

2014 " referendum" had only 2 options on the ballots :
1. Independed Crimea
2. Crimea as a part of Russia
There was not even a checkmark box for : part of Ukraine

You glanced over a critical point, which follows the Budapest Memorandum (also not mentioned). After Ukrainian independence, the naval base in Sevastopol remained exclusively accessible by Russia. While there were tensions and disagreements, this was ultimately bilaterally agreed upon in 1997 in the “Partition Treaty on the Status and Conditions of the Black Sea Fleet”. Russia unilaterally terminated this agreement in 2014 by invading Crimea.

If they now lose this war, they lose much more than they (Russia) had before the war. Ukraine is highly unlikely to allow Russian military presence in Sevastopol to come back, rendering the Black Sea Fleet mostly obsolete.

I can't believe you didn't mention the fact that, durin the referendum for Ukrainian independence in 1991, the majority in Crimea also voted for this independence.

Actually, the most important reason behind giving Crimea to Ukrainian SSR was due to geography(because Russian territory does not even have a ground border with the peninsula) and management(it was easier for administrative bodies in Crimea to exchange data with the closest region).
Btw absolute majority of native Crimean Tatars want the Crimea to be a part of Ukraine than Russia because of disrespect of Tatar’s culture and forced migration held by the Stalin’s command

Golden Horde wasn't Genghis Khan's "horde". It was one of the successor states.

I apparantly totally misunderstood the concept of giving a gift. I always thought when i gave something it is not mine anymore and cant be taken back.

The Third Rome hypothesis buttresses much of the Ottoman, Ukraine and Russian troubles.
Khrushchev's autobiographies explain some of his thinking vis a vis Ukraine and Crimea.
Thx for the content!

The real reason is two. One is Sevastopol that hosted a Russian Naval Base and two natural resources around Crimea is abundant and one of them is the largest gas deposits in that part of the world.

One important thing is missing - The North Crimean Canal, which supplies about 85% of all water Crimea needs. It goes from Dnipro river to the peninsula by Ukrainian territory and was the major obstacle why Crimea was transferred to Ukraine.

This fails to mention the Budapest Memorandum, where Moscow promised to respect Ukraine's current borders in exchange for Ukraine's nuclear weapons.

Sort of important.

I thought that Ukraine wasn't going to last that long in this war but the people of Ukraine have a lot of heart and I respect that and I hope they win because they deserve it .
Long live Ukraine a country with a lot of heart💙💛

The thing about the "Soviet Union" giving Crimea to "Ukraine" is that Ukraine wasn't a country as long as the Soviet Union existed. The Russians obviously never expected Ukraine could become independent and take Crimea with it.

Returned? It was transferred not returned. Because there had never been a Ukraine ever.
