Navaja design originates from southern Spain in Andalusia. Its name originates from the word, razor, due to its similarities to the old school shaving blades.

Spain in the 16 century outlawed carrying swords in public to stop duels. Eventually, people started carrying these utility knives as self defense and dueling implements. Those knives would evolve to become the Navaja.

The Navaja would become a symbol of cultural pride and representation of working class people having the right to bare arms. Spanish soldiers would carry them and use them as last ditch weapons as well. It could be found in South, Latin America as well. Later it’s blade design would inspire the creation of the American Bowie knife.
