If you've ever been to an Italian gelateria (especially in the south), you know that the experience is a little bit more than simply grabbing an ice cream cone. They craft all kinds of incredible desserts using gelato! Decadent ice cream sandwiches, "truffles" of stuffed ice cream, and Italian ice cream cakes are just a few examples.

Today, Eva shares how to make gelato at home plus a handful of our favorite gelato-based desserts. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Oh, and that reminds us: we've brought on a special guest to explain the technical difference between gelato and ice cream 👨🏻‍🍳

Ciao, ragazzi! What's your favorite gelato or ice cream flavor?

I totally need you guys to make an entire video about Pistachio. I know it's expensive and it's hard to find, especially considering the one we use, the Pistacchio di Bronte is protected and therefore extra expensive, but it's such an important ingredient, especially in Sicily. From gelato to granita, from pesto to a spread that's better than Nutella, we use it as topping and we use it as the main star of the dish and our Pistacchio verde di Bronte is one of the best pistachio varieties in the world.

My favorite gelato flavor is definitely pistachio! I’m fortunate enough to have an authentic gelateria run by a sicilian family near me. I could eat their pistachio gelato every day of the week.

Ava, I LOVE how careful, intentional, caring and proud you are about every single step you take in cooking. The six of us were raised by a single working mother who had no time to teach me, the eldest daughter, to cook so I just threw whatever we had in our bare cupboards together to feed us all. Your techniques and attitude are inspirational and nourishing for the soul. Thank you both for posting. Love them all!

Thank you Eva for making us these rich and beautiful gelato desserts. I have fond memories of Spumone and especially Tartufo which we served at our wedding 34 years ago. Thank you Harper for Mr. Rogers, my heart melted along with your gelato!

Here in Australia we have a Gelateria which beat all the other competitors, to win the Gelato World Tour in Rimini - Italian teams came second and third (Francesco Mastroianni and Alessandro Lancierini) It is the best gelato I've ever eaten, and every time I visit Sydney I have been known to eat as many as 20 scoops of their gelato over the course of a week. My favourite flavour of theirs is their Mandorla Affogato which is the flavour that won them the world title. I am also partial to Lotus Biscoff Gelato which you'll find quite often in gelaterias here, and There is a Gelateria here in Brisbane run by a Chinese man that loved gelato so much he went and studied in Italy to learn how to make it - they often have traditionally made gelato but with Chinese inspired flavours - I love their Taro flavour, their coconut and Pandan Leaf (made with coconut milk) and their Earl Grey Tea.

Hubby and I spent our first anniversary in Italy on a super-budget USO (US serviceman's organization) tour. Unfortunately, we were in Rome on a Tuesday when all the 'main attractions' were closed. We were very plucky though and found a nice little 'ice cream shop' (sorry, gelateria?) where we purchased two desserts that looked like American ice cream cones made with local strawberries. Great to be there in May when Roman strawberries were in season! We were being 'cheap' and not eating at the places the tour took all the American tourists and got to make many memories of foods purchased willy-nilly away from the tour group. Loved this video and the many memories it prompted.

On a hot summer day in Firenze nothing hit the spot like lemone. . . Tastes are incredibly vivid memories.

Lemon 🍋 gelato is the best. Not to be confused with lemon sorbet. That gelato tartufo at the end was insane 🤤. The spumoni that I am used is like Neapolitan ice cream except it is with pistachio, chocolate, and a sweet cherry flavor with candied cherries 🍒; nothing like what Eva made today. But of course it looked delicious.

Bless you Eva! Although I left my native Vienna when I was 5 years old, I still remember certain beloved foods after almost 70 years. When my Mom, daughter and I went back to Austria in 1996, I revisited those favorites. I can and have made most myself, I couldn't find a good hazelnut gelato despite looking and looking and looking. I can't *wait* to try your recipe. Mille Grazie!

Thank you for the great recipes. We were lucky growing up in Toronto in the 70's that we had a fantastic corner convenience store where Giacamo made italian gelato. Oh the sweet memories. Chocolate, banana, grape, coffee, lemon. Thank you Eva and Harper❤.
