Imagine all the things you can do…off of your phone. Parents be warned.

TEDxTeen opening music by BlackDoe

Ann Makosinski is an 18 year-old student, innovator and entrepreneur. Her first toy was a box of transistors. From there, her interest in science and creating arose. One of her friends in the Philippines got a failing grade because she didn't have any electricity or light to study with at night. As a potential solution, Ann invented a flashlight that ran off the heat of the human hand - the Hollow Flashlight. The invention won her age category at the 2013 Google Science Fair, as well as numerous awards at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair. She appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and was named one of TIMES 30 Under 30. Ann hopes to manufacture her flashlight, bringing the invention to developing countries and including them in emergency kits. Ann also invented the eDrink - a coffee mug that harvests the excess heat of your hot drink and converts it into electricity to charge a phone. Ann debuted the eDrink this October on her second appearance on the Tonight Show.

To summarise her speech, as the great teacher Robin Sharma says: "Addiction to distraction is the death of creative production".

I don't own a cell phone of any sort. When people ask me how I manage to live without a smart phone, I always reply, "Very peacefully."

i’m 18, have been on social media since i was 11. too much of my life has revolved around the online world. i’ve deleted all my social media, and getting a flip phone! i’m excited to experience and reconnect the real world once again ☺️💗

She’s brilliant and her parents are to be commended and credited for giving her a great start in being different and creative. She most definitely is not superficial👏🏽👏🏽

This is one of the most inspiring videos I’ve ever seen. I kind of regret how I gave up creativity growing up. I used to regret it already but NOW I really understand the loss I had. I’m going to try to start again

Let's just be real, life was working without smartphones. In fact we can make arguments it was better.

The lady has a point.. Broke my phone screen and have spent a month waiting for it to be fixed (because of mail problems).
In the absence of quick entertainment, I find myself being more productive.

I grew up from a poor family so I had no choice but to make my own toys because my parents just simply couldn't afford to buy one. People in our place call me the "scientists" coz I always make toys or tools out of scrap materials. That developed my skills until I ended up being a Mechanical Engineer.😂

I respect how her parents encouraged creativity very early on like that. sometimes when you're given everything, you don't discover how many things you can make yourself.

This is a tough one. At 1st I thought that depriving a child of toys inhibits their developing minds (imagination, creation, problem solving) but on the other hand the way Ann was raised seems to have heightened all that and more. Share this video with everyone in the world.

Your parents are brilliant and they molded you into something you don’t really see anymore. Something so special and underrated. I hope you pass this parenting style onto your children
