How to Homebrew Your Nintendo 3DS (11.16)

In this video, I show you how to set up Homebrew on your Nintendo 3DS. This guide is designed for the 11.16 firmware, which is the latest version.

Out of nowhere 11.17.0-50 has been released for the Nintendo 3DS firmware in all regions.

It seems "stability" is the only information Nintendo has given us about the update.

It seems the System Settings, eShop app, and Internet Browser were updated. For US-region 3DSes, the HOME menu was also updated.

Here's what you should know:

◉ If your device is running Luma 10.2.1 or higher, it is 100% safe to update. You can check your Luma version by holding (Select) while booting your device.

◉ If your device is on an older Luma version, you should update Luma before you update your device to 11.17.0.

◉ If your device does not yet have custom firmware, do NOT update to the latest version, as installation methods are currently unclear.

I plan to create an 11.17.0 tutorial once more information is known about it.
However, in the meantime, I will release a video on how you can update to this version if you already have a modded system. So make sure you stay tuned!

Someone has already mentioned this but I'll say it again. Thank you for saying which buttons to press through the whole process, I really appreciate it. I watched the video once before attempting it myself. I've always been too scared to mod anything but this video made the process especially easy.

My brother who can't use computers wants to tell you that your tutorial is brilliant! He loves how specific you are about things, how you read out the names of things, and how you specify stuff like the number of times you press A during whatever part. DISCLAIMER TO ANYONE WHO HASNTED UPDATED TO 17.0 AND IS USING THIS METHOD. At 9:32 where your 3DS is supposed to fail a system update, since 17.0 came out, it will update your system instead of getting error. What I did was to disconnect my 3DS from the wifi (i just unplogged my router) before pressing ok on the update. After it will fail the update, once you reach the Error Code screen, connect back to the internet and the rest of the steps will work as normal. :)

As of 12/27/2022 this homebrew method still works for those who are curious. This is my first time ever homebrewing any device and lemme tell you this guide was super helpful. I homebrewed my 3DS (2011 version) and am currently installing Virtual Console games that I never got the chance to play when I was a kid. I 'm barely scratching the surface of homebrewing and am already loving it! This definitely gave my 3DS some life back to it and I plan to basically take it with me wherever I go. 10/10 guide don't be scared to homebrew! (Can't wait till I can safely homebrew my Nintendo Switch once a more simpler method arises).

As of January 28th, 2023 it still works! I've never modded a console before and this tutorial was ridiculously helpful! Very clear cut and to the point!

probably one of the best hot to videos ever imo. I've never dared to jailbreak any device i had in worry that I would fuck it up along the way or something. As of February 19, 2023 it still works :) for those following this tutorial with an old 3DS XL, I just used a Sandisk 32 GB extreme SDHC sd card and followed every step carefully. I kept going back on the video to hear every single step before proceeding. Good luck! 💖
