This Is Why I Back Up

❤️ Here's another example of why I go digital. I enables a level of backup safety that single originals simply can't achieve.

My backup story
- I had multiple 8mm and Super-8 movies transferred to digital form.
- One package was lost on return.
- The transfer company kept a digital backup, which I was able to download instead.
- Digital forms are much easier to back up and keep safe.
- The “lost” originals were recovered, due to the kindness of a stranger.

Putting things in digital form means more safety nets.

I'm a hobbyist photo organizer and techie to all my friends. I'm always telling them storage is cheap. If one copy is good 2 or more is better, home, online and off site. There are also a couple of sites on the web where you can actually purchase permanent storage for sharing your memories. I think that's the final step in preserving those digital files. Saving and sharing not just for today but for future generations. I find your videos incredibly helpful and plan to share them with my less tech savvy friends and family.

Glad everything worked out for you, and yes I am old enough to remember 8mm and Super 8 moves. Watch an earlier video on backing up and decided it was probably time to do a backup. Two days later my 10 year old laptop died. Without following your advice I would hate to think of the memories and work I would have lost. Thank you.

a problem with old physical media is that can deteriorate overtime and old projectors, cameras and other audio equipment are no longer available to play them. This is why it is a good idea to digitize them.

Yes, great points and story. With digital copies, everyone in the family can have a copy (it sure is nice to label and organize these if possible, even ID "who is who" and when shot if possible). You can put these on a disc, thumb drive, and/or hard drive and store it in another location, such as a safe deposit box, and so forth.
I know people who lost all family photos and records in the 1989 SF earthquake and fires. Do the back and conversion now while you can.

Thanks Leo, I learnt the hard way how important it is to protect your memories. I absently formatted a harddrive with most of my videos and pictures. I was lucky I used a program called recover and got them back. I now have two cloud services and a external harddrive with the data on, so I should be safe now.

I too have all of our family home movies from the 1950's - 1970's digitized. Great memories. One thought for a future backup video; most NAS's have the ability to do Snapshots ( not the camera type, but you already knew that.) Snapshots of data can be a lifesaver for accidentally deleted or corrupted files. I would love to see you explain the value to your viewers especially those who have not embraced the home NAS. They are so valuable that I'm surprised Snapshots are not a feature in Windows.

For an international trip next year I'm going to have a somewhat reverse

Digital copies of all tickets / reservations / etc.... locally on my phone and on my tablet.
Digital copies of everything in two of my mailboxes, plus one on my Google drive.
But then also one *physical* printed copy in my carry-on luggage, and one *physical* copy in my checked luggage. ;-)

Paranoid? Me????

3-2-1 backups. 3 copies on 2 different media types and 1 copy stored off site. 1 copy is none when things go wrong. Multiple copies makes you much safer from digital disaster! 👍

Some people think the cloud is safe but it's not a great place for archival storage.

Hey Leo, how do we backup contacts on a Samsung phone using OneDrive.

I guess you have to accept the risk of loss during that initial sending out of that valuable original media.
