I prefer longer and then use short cut. Longer code will provide clear picture and then we can use lambda and stream API.

Are you comparing like functional programming vs normal programming? Every time I write functional, the code is always less lines of codes, but I think it might be confusing to people who are less experience to the functional features of the language, because it took me some time to get used to functional programming as well. I also find a bunch of stackoverflow and articles that suggest the stream api for Java is actually slower than normal code, but more experiance devs says to just ignore it.

I personally prefer long code for obvious reasons that understanding the short code is sometimes difficult and debugging is tiresome in case of short code. But still it all depends on the scenarios and the target should always be making code more efficient instead of reducing the lines of code.

Anyday 3 lines of Code is better than 10 lines of code . The 10 LOC is more precise/understandable but 3 LOC is Maintainable.
