I turn to this scene for a hug whenever the world gets sad and ugly.

Notice how when Liesel starts to sing, she sits on the floor with the other kids? Before, she was sitting next to her dad, because she was used to acting as the family’s second parent. When Maria came to fill that role, it gave her a chance to be a child again.

Georg and Liesl singing together is very touching to me. She's old enough that she probably remembers quite well what her father was like before her Mother died, and it must have been devastating for her to basically not only lose one parent, but two. It's moments like these when you can see how much Georg truly does love his kids, but really needed a wake-up call to show him how his behavior was hurting them.

It is a song about protecting a flower. A flower that were it to be destroyed, the land it is native to would simultaneously cease to be because this flower is so essential to the identity of the land. This is literal. It is also a metaphor in that the flower is delicate and easily destroyed and yet strong because it is plentiful and has a long history. Like how individuals are fragile and may be killed but together we are strong and with deep roots.

Headcanon that when Leisl was very young, before the Captain's first wife died, they sang this song together. When he nods to her to join him, there's a silent question: do you remember? And she immediately takes her place on the floor, like she did all those years ago. Because she's old enough to remember when things were very different in their house. She never truly forget, still singing in secret while sneaking off to meet her crush. They laugh, and it's so fond and genuine and happy, because this is the father-daughter relationship they've both been missing all these years. And right here, right in this moment, Leisl gets her father back.

There’s just something about this song that makes you feel at peace.

The scene where the Captain and his daughter sing together hits differently now. R.I.P. Christopher Plummer.

This song is not only a sign of Austrian patriotism in a dark age, but also to remind the world that they should be proud of their country no matter the difficulties

Very proud of my Dad Bill Lee who provided Christopher Plummer’s singing voice. He also sang that beautiful duet with Julie Andrews written for the movie, “Something Good.” He also provided other what they call ghost voicing projects, most notably for John Kerr, alt. Cable in South Pacific. A stunning version of Younger Than Springtime

That look of realization of the baroness and the brother always gets me. The moment when she knew she had lost the Captain to Maria.

Edelweiss, edelweiss
Every morning you greet me

Small and white
Clean and bright
You look happy to meet me

Blossom of snow
May you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever

Edelweiss, edelweiss
Bless my home-land forever

Small and white
Clean and bright
You look happy to meet me

Blossom of snow
May you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever

Edelweiss, edelweiss
Bless my home-land forever

When i turned 1 we didn’t have very much money, but my mom had saved up for the past year to get me a white jewellery box with a ballerina spinning to this song, this was the first song i ever heard, and when i received the text about my mothers passing this song was playing. Yesterday I was walking home and this song started playing inside a shop, i stopped and went to listen to the music but as i stepped back a car rammed into the pole i was next to a moment ago, even though i don’t believe in miracles i like to think that was my mom protecting me. I love you so much Mum, i miss you everyday, happy birthday in 3 days

1:33 is such an authentic laugh while he sings the word "happy".

I was cleaning my room when I opened a music box that played this song. Brought back a nostalgic feeling. Grew up with the sound of music

My mother used to love this movie and this song. She was a part time opera singer and would sing songs like this.
RIP Ma, I know you're singing this with Christopher Plummer in Heaven.

It's the way he stares at Maria the whole time instead of the Baroness. And the way she stares right back at him. Wow.
