I love how elegant this whole scene is. The way Maria walks, the synchronized way they all bow and kneel. The most poignant part though is when the Reverend Mother nods at her from behind the railings. It signifies the contemplative life of the nuns and Maria saying goodbye to that life forever.

What many people missed is the ending: That final bell (the larger and slower one) signifies the Anschluss - the annexation of Austria by Germany. A beautiful wedding scene, followed by an ominous event. Incredible juxtaposition.

As a kid I always imagined how completely blissed out the children must have been at this wedding. To lose your mother so young, I think the only thing you can hope for after that is that the woman you love most in the world and the dad you love most happen to fall in love with each other and are both there for you. Maria really did save the Von Trap family 🥹🥹
