Aphids are small soft-bodied insects that attack and feed off plants, leaving them weak and prone to disease. An aphid infestation is not only bad for your plants, but for you and your property. Typically, if you have an aphid problem, you have an ant problem.
Aphids and ants have a mutually beneficial partnership. Aphids suck on plants, feeding off the plant’s nutrient-rich sap. They then secrete a sugary honeydew syrup. Ants love this honeydew, and will shepherd and protect aphids from other insects hoping to attack and eat the aphid.
IDENTIFICATION:
The aphid is very small, typically only an eighth of an inch in length, with soft bodies shaped like pears. They can vary in color from green, yellow, black, gray, or red. A defining characteristic of all aphid species is a tube-like protrusion on their rear.
You’ll also know it’s aphids if you see them clumped together on a plant. Your plant can lose its health quickly due to them feeding in large numbers.
INSPECTION:
Check your plants on a regular basis for aphids. Look on new shoots, on buds, along stems, or under leaves. Because they often clump in large numbers, they are not too difficult to spot.
You can also check for any mold or fungus growing on your plants. Mold and fungus tends to grow around the aphid’s honeydew secretion, so this is sometimes a good aphid activity indicator.
CONTROL:
We recommend using a liquid insecticide to spray your plants directly. Do this with professional-grade pesticides like Dominion 2L or Reclaim IT.
Both of these products offer quick knockdowns and residuals of up to ninety days. Dominion and Reclaim can also control and prevent many other pests like roaches, spiders, mosquitoes, ants, and other crawling pests.
These are both safe to use on plants and each one has a special benefit. Dominion 2L is a systemic insecticide. This means that it will soak into the plant’s tissue and safely spread throughout the plant. So if aphids return and take a bite of the plant, they’ll die.
Reclaim IT is not systemic, but has the benefit of being a repellent. This will repel any aphids or other pests from invading. Both products offer unique forms of control, but both are just as effective.
With whichever you choose, you will mix the chemical with water in a pump sprayer. Be sure to follow label instructions for proper mix and usage rates. Spray your plants to the point of runoff. Be sure to coat the entire plant, leaving no safe harbor for the aphids. This means you will also want to make sure to spray the underside of leaves and any branches.
PREVENTION:
You can prevent aphids from destroying your plants by diligently checking your plants regularly. You can even grow other plants that attract aphid predators, such as ladybugs. Ladybugs hunt and feed on aphids and having plants that ladybugs like can help.
But for total guaranteed control, be sure re-apply either your Dominion 2L or Reclaim IT every ninety days.
