It's so stressful to buy a car from a dealer, they really need to have an option to buy directly from the manufacturer website.

For added security I would include the following statement on the buyer's order: "[Dealership Name] agrees that vehicle shall not be sold to another buyer without the expressed written consent of [Customer Name]." I've heard stories of customers factory ordering vehicles and placing deposits on them, but when the vehicles arrived they were sold out from under the original buyer to a higher bidder.

I recently ordered a 250 Super Duty and when I went to start the negotiations, the salesman said it's impossible to negotiate the price when the truck isn't built yet and the monroney sticker hasn't been produced. This is exactly the info I was trying to find in research 3-4 months ago. Thank you !

Great video. I can't speak about other Japanese brands, but I've owned 3 Subarus and each was factory-ordered with the equipment/colors I wanted, one from Indiana and the other two from Japan. Each time I just configured my build on the website and sent it to the dealer, negotiated an OOD price, and then they ordered it. Emails were the documentation, but after watching this video I see that other manufacturers/dealers don't make the process so simple. I guess I have a really good dealer and must help that I have a history with them too.

I learned my lesson with a few of the red flags when going through the process of an in-transit Honda. I now know better about dealer add ons, transparency and communication. Sucked to learn but no money lost and I didn't give the dealer my business. I did go to their competitor who had all green flags and who earned my business.
Thank you CarEdge for all your help with the process of buying a vehicle!

Reminded me of my first factory order. As a high school senior I ordered a 1973 Vega GT. Medium blue, no stripes, light saddle interior and automatic. Was about $3k but I traded in my 1970 340 Duster. Was very exciting waiting for it. Picked it up on my graduation day. Unfortunately, doubt many high school seniors today could afford to do this. The Vega looked good, but not a well built car. Traded it three years later on a 1976 Celica GT coupe. One of best cars I have owned. About a decade later ordered a 1985 Dodge Lancer ES 5 speed. Ordered from a family friend who owned the dealership. One of the worst cars ever owned. Throw out bearing went bad in a few months. Engine knocked constantly. Dealer said it must be a lemon, he suggested I paint it yellow. Traded it after six months on a 1984 Chevy Celebrity station wagon. Turned out to be a great car. Love your videos

I've ordered every new car (domestic) I've bought since 1986. One thing (I learned a few years back) is that during negotiations I always remind the salesperson that they need to take into account that my sold order allows them 100% of the holdbacks, and 0% interest on the dealers floor plan. Basically let's them know that I'm not some uneducated chump they can take advantage of when making the deal.

This was really insightful, thank you! I'm planning on factory ordering a 2024 BMW 540ix when they're available, and I've never done that before.

I have factory ordered a 2023 Rav 4 Hybrid, done through the dealer. Have just been notified 'my car' has been built per my options list and it's on a ship now to New Zealand

I ordered my Subaru outback from the factory as it’s made in Lafayette Indiana. It took just over 2 months.

I've factory ordered two VWs, one from Mexico, one from Germany. No hassles, got the supplier discount, but that was before covid. We did the "both parties sign the build order", I think it was a $500 deposit both times, salesman kept me informed on production & shipping. Mexican built car was built in a month, then took four months to get here. Germany built car took two months to build, three months to ship.

Will agree with other comments regarding ability to factory border a Subaru. I just ordered a new Outback. Not much on the lot at all and most are spoken for before they arrive at the dealership. Factory order is only way to get trim level you want. My son factory ordered a Crosstrek about a year ago. Took about 8-9 weeks

Q: Is it understood or does it need to be specified in writing on the buyer's order that the deposit is refundable, non-refundable, or is to be applied to the agreed upon sales price. ? Never used the process before and looking for holes in the buyer protection "fence" as it were.

You can also factory order a Subaru. I bought my outback that way. I had to wait for about 2 months to get my car. I got a great price, though. They are willing to negotiate a lower price for factory orders because they have less overhead on these vehicles.

I ordered a Bronco. Negotiated the OTD price. They lowered the MSRP by their dealer fee amount.
