Recently in Puerto Rico they signed a law that forces dealerships to provide the “out of the door price” if someone asks online or by phone. It is now illegal there to force people to come in to the dealerships to get the “price”. I hope the states do something similar here

Ya, just bought a car from a dealership last week. Pretty much followed each of these before watching the video. I did do some research and heard this advice from others. Just talked about OTD price, was pretty much ready to walk out at any time, and got pre-approval from our bank, and got the interest rate reduced by a little over a point. And basically got more for my trade-in than I paid for the trade-in... so a massive win.

How refreshing to find out I have been doing things correctly for decades. Except for my trade being a separate transaction. I only use "my car plus how much equals OTD" IT is one transaction. I raise the price of my trade to equal their silly prices. The only number that matters is the difference. I never ask them to lower their price. I raise my price. I tell them what I am doing. It works.

I'm a brand new member of YAA . I'm so happy and grateful to have found you since I've been putting off a new car purchase and need to buy one soon. That said, it's awful that I have to spend so much time and energy to prepare to buy a car as if I'm preparing for battle. The games are a huge turnoff for modern consumers as you beautifully call out in your manifesto. I wish I could rent you for my purchase day!

Things really need to change in this industry with sales practices. It actually keeps me from replacing my cars until they're falling apart because I can't stand the games. If it wasn't so difficult and virtually adversarial to purchase a car, I might not actually wait so long. Just aa bar owners didn't realize how many patrons they were losing to allowing cigarette smoking, the car industry isn't realizing how many sales its losing to outmoded hard sales practices. My dad was in the industry working for a major DC area car company with many dealerships and I heard stories about what the salesmen would do to hold buyers hostage and manipulate them that would curl your toes. I look forward to buying a car like a root canal.

It would be so much simpler and better for all involved if the industry shifted to fair market pricing like pretty much every other consumer industry and sales staff actually focused on helping buyers.

Just bought a new vehicle. They offered 5.9% financing. Explained I was pre approved for 3.75% they came back with 3.68% about a 40% drop in interest rate from their initial "great" offer.

I walked in the Toyota dealer for the Corolla
He gave the the msrp like 30k and 4 K tax
Total 34 k
I offered him 25000 drive out
He swing down with 25000 plus tax
I said no …
We walked out, he called me back in 2 days and want to talk about the price …

I found a car dealer and salesman through your channel selling cars at or slightly below MSRP with no BS fees. Thank you and shout out to Manny at 112 Hyundai ..

Great info as usual! I wish I was more informed when I bought my prior car in 2008! 2022 has been a much better buying experience thanks to your info! Even in this market and an 8 month wait! Went into it knowing what I was doing. Knowledge is power.

I would also add when talking about interest rate. If you know the amount you want to finance, figure out the payments before hand. I did this and had a finance guy come up with the wrong numbers (higher) three times before he got to my number. He would scream your wrong. And I’d say guess again. I have all the costs and I figured it out ahead of time. Then as they back track they would claim oh I didn’t see that number or some other crap. In any case have it all figured out ahead of time. Drives them nuts when you are right and they are wrong. And always easier to do it right before you sign then after you’ve signed. Just go in thinking they are going to try to screw you at every turn.

certain states, not california, allow sales tax on the DIFFERENCE after trade in So if you sell your car independently, you have to pay sales tax on the whole amount there, the dealer has an advantage

This is so helpful, guys. I've been doing my homework on this since I plan to purchase a new car in the next few months. Thank you so much.

This is the best car buying advice given in the shortest amount of time I've seen. After 8 new car dealer purchases in my life had to learn the hard way.

Years ago I got preapproved for a car loan, went to the dealer and drove the car and then after talking to the salesman he told me that they wouldn't sell me the car unless I went with their financing. I walked out the door and never looked back. Two weeks later I saw they had the car I drove listed for less than I had offered.

The only times I took the dealer financing in recent years is when there were incentives to do so. Then I turn around and refi at my credit union for a lower rate. Best of both worlds. On my current vehicle, they gave me 3.99%. once I had complete paperwork, I went to me credit union where they offered 1.99%. It took 3 payments off the loan at same payment.

All great ideas. I think the key is to go in fully educated, have the facts to back up your proposal, and have some twist that throws them off their game.

The best negotiation I ever did was again with all the facts and a monthly amount, number of payments and nothing more than the trade down. I had room in my amount, it was not my final offer but I had a story that capped my limit. "There is no way I can go home and tell my wife I spent more than 400.00 a month." The dealer removed their logo from the back and asked me not to tell anyone about the deal. He also asked me if my wife was a lawyer or CPA. In reality she didn't know about the deal. I was the CPA but it is harder to argue with a CPA who is not in the room.

KBB does have an "instant cash offer" now, which will always be less than what they just told you your vehicle was worth, weird right?... lol
