How often should you change your engine oil? #carmaintenance

We asked our mechanics... "How often should you change your engine oil?" Growing up I was always taught to change your engine oil every three thousand miles or every six months, wh came first.

Today, technology has advanced and synthetic motor oil has become the new norm, thereby extending the amount of time necessary between oil changes. However, different manufacturers still have their own recommendations on how often you should change your oil. Always follow your manufacturers maintenance guidelines. 👍

I agree with 4k. Aggressive changing oil will do wonders on your engine

Change engine oil 4-5k max regardless of whether you use synthetic blend or full synthetic. Ignore the manufacturers suggested times. They're in the business to sell new cars

The smile from the 10k guy was the 'so I can make that new engine money' smile 😂

If you're going to 10k you better make sure your oil filter is rated for that mileage as well. Honestly I take the manufacturer recommendation and cut it in half, so for my car that's 4-5k.

The reason some auto maker's are claiming you can go 10k on an oci is they're afraid of getting bad marks form consumer reports. The auto maker's only care about your car lasting the duration of the factory warranty; after that you're on your own. Oil change's are cheaper than a new engine.

I am a technician and not ignorant to the variables in real world situations and the fact that lubrication is #1 in a engine so keeping it prime is key and will give longevity to your engine and seals

This is like asking your child how much candy they should get before dinner.

As a oil technician, conventional oil is 3k, synthetic blend 4k, full synthetic 6k

Would never take my car to this shop if 2 out of 3 techs think 10k oil changes are ok

Full synthetic with filter gets changed at 5k miles. Peace of mind and Scotty agrees

Manufacturers set them from 3k to 10k-15k so that your engines sludges up and wears out faster also helps them to to decline warranty repairs.

Fuck that! I as a shop owner, builder, tech, my dailys are every 3k on full synthetic. Religiously change them. I also cut open the filter and check for debris on anything over 75k miles on the engine.

3000 miles AND before and after winter if you live in a seasonal climate.
Deduct 30% from manufacturer recommendation on every other fluid.
I have done this forever and have paid ONE mechanic bill in 20 years. It was for an AC compressor. Only reason i didn't do it myself was i cant evacuate the freon.

Last mechanic spot on, different manufacturers recommend different oil changes, , plus each manufacturers will have there own preffered oil and its different characteristics will dictate different intervals.

3k blend, 5/6k synthetic. People need to remember that it’s more than an oil change it also includes a vehicle inspection (atleast at my shop) and vehicles should be inspected regularly not once a year after 10k miles

My car uses 0w-20, they say I can go 10k but I change it every 3 - 5k, my car has 180k miles and I run her kind of hard.

I change mine every spring and fall. So roughly every 4-5k miles. Only takes an hour or so

Half the miles that the manufacturer recommends is the right answer

On the Toyota 2.5 L engine you have to do 5000 mile oil changes otherwise you’ll blow the engine up at 120, 000 miles
