Victoria's Viral Secrets are getting personal... Let's talk about one of the deadly dangers in your home right now. Huffing inhalants. Huffing AKA Bagging AKA Whippets, is when someone intentionally inhales chemicals to get high. Common substances used are white-out, spray paint, aerosol cans, nitrous oxide, gasoline, paint thinner, sharpies, etc. It is a serious problem that occurs worldwide.
I'm personally targeting anyone that has connections with pre-teen through teenage children. I was a teenager with a huffing problem, and I want to help you all know warning signs to look for, short-term and long-term effects, and how quickly this can turn deadly.
It's jarring to think back how close I was to death without even knowing it. A big myth among parents and teachers is that if a kid tries inhalants, it'll only be once or twice. This may be the case, or it may become a substance abuse problem, but either way one try can be deadly.
Although people of all ages use inhalants, this age group is most likely. They are cheap to buy, and even without cash easy enough to get your hands on. I could go through your home right now and find at least 5 things to get high. Nearly all inhalants produce loss of sensation and consciousness it a lot is consumed. The high lasts for only seconds-minutes, and leaves the blood stream just as quickly.
Signs of use include: chemical smells on clothes or breath, slurred speech, reduced appetite, nausea, pain/stains on skin (it causes frostbite), inattentive, uncoordinated, chemical soaked rags or bags, empty chemical/spray paint cans, depression, irritability, hostility, paranoia, euphoria, hallucinations. Some of the long term effects include: irreversible brain damage, nerve damage, addiction, memory loss, heart attack, coma, asphyxiation, suffocation, and death.
Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome is when someone dies, quite instantly, from the use of inhalants. It is rare for an EMS team to be able to revive someone that has overdosed on inhalants, and there is no "safe" dose of inhalants as there are with other substances such as alcohol. SSDS isn't entirely well understood since people die so quickly. Medical professionals can treat someone's symptoms of inhalant use, but cannot reverse the bodily effects. If you become paralyzed, there's no fixing it. The brain damage is permanent. The nerve damage, memory loss, liver damage- all lifelong.
This is intended to be an educational, heads up, video to parents, caregivers, teachers, school nurses, etc-anyone that cares about pre-teens and teens. We've got to keep a close eye on what children are exposed to and involved in. I am in no way glamorizing, encouraging, or condoning inhalant use. There was previously a big advertisement campaign with the goal of targeting this age demographic and warning them about the dangers of inhalants. It backfired. Then they realized they just informed millions of youth how to get high for free. That's not what we're going for here! Research has shown prevention and education information about inhalants is most effective when given to younger children. Please use your discretion about whether or not you feel this is appropriate to watch with the youth in your life.
