It's explained in the Manga that King Guiseric captured a dissenting monk. He tortured that monk mercilessly until one day his prayers were answered. The monk became the first of the God Hand, Void. King Guiseric's kingdom was destroyed and sunk bellow Midland. The ethereal world and the causality world were separated. Thus sealing away King Guiseric's kingdom. Guiseric donned the berserker to fight Void, but was consumed by it until he died. The old witch that trained Schierke was his love long ago. She placed him in the skull knight armor to bring him back. That's why she kept the Berserk armor in her home. Skull Knight (Guiseric) has been searching for a way to beat Void ever since. And he has come close with the Behelit sword. From what we know, brute strength isn't enough to beat Griffith. He obviously fear magic for a reason. And, Guiseric's near slash on Void shocked them. I think the power to defeat Griffith lies with using the behelit to meet God and gain the power needed. In the end, I think Griffith is not the main villian. Instead, I think Void is the final villian.

Griffith ends up sacrificing his kingdom in order to preserve his own life. Miura gave an I sane amount of hints. If you know berserk well, then you would understand that the moonlight boy is the hawk of light, and Griffith/Femto is the hawk of darkness.
