Android Q Beta First Look!

Android Q dropped today! Well, the Android Q beta arrived as a first build and we took it for a quick spin. The changes aren't massive here, but the best parts of our year are playing with new versions of Android.

We've got Android Q beta up and running on our Pixel 3 XL. You can run this too on your Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, or Pixel 3 as well.

It looks like a dark mode is there, and you enable it by turning on Battery Saver. That's not a great solution, since Battery Saver limits phone features.


Others switched to night mode and a dark wallpaper before updating and that left them with system dark mode once they updated to Q.

Not sure why the dark mode/light mode toggle was left out of Android Q but if you had dark mode enabled before doing the update. You have full system dark mode. Also not a big change, but the end call dial beep changed. It went from a harsh beep to a nice mellow jingle.

Dark theme is now jet black or amoled black. I was already on dark theme when I installed not sure if it will change with a light wallpaper.

They even changed the sound you hear after ending a call, now it’s very similar to the sound that you hear after disconnect from discord.

I guess the “Force Desktop Mode” could be an answer to Samsung Dex. Perhaps turning the Pixel phone into a PixelBook equivalent?

I'm currently on the Beta Q program, and I made the update while my device was still in its dark mode based on my prior settings. I can confirm that Google is, in fact, working on a true dark mode based on what I'm seeing. The settings menu is completely dark, as well as notifications from all apps, taking full advantage of the Pixel's AMOLED screen.

Google Photos is working on dark mode too based on what I'm seeing but it's currently a mess and needs a lot of work, as it looks like it's in an awkward middle phase between light and dark. My guess is dark mode will carry into other Google apps in the future, hopefully among those Maps, Playstore, Play Music, Keep, and the Assistant.


Accent Color: Because the device's dark mode is VERY dark, the Accent Color labeled as "black" simply becomes white. Additionally all other colors in dark mode are far less saturated and more pastel.

big props for (possibly) giving this to the original pixels. good way to save face after the disaster by the name pixel 3.

hope that it'll hold something "revolutionary" instead of having the same staleness as pie.

possibly because my phone was already set to dark theme.. When I downloaded the beta, the menus, the pull down, the settings, they're all dark mode and not grey but black!

I've got the night mode on my Android Q Beta as it was enabled before downloading, so I am guessing it is just the button that is not currently there!?
