The best way to fight these expenses is not to pay them. Friends and myself have gone to dealers, got a price on the vehicle then turned over to the finance office where they start adding. That's when you walk out. This really sends them over the wall. If you have nothing to do on a Saturday get some friends and go with a dealership and play games with them. When five or so people take it all the way to the finance office and then walk out they get the message. It's fun to watch them squirm.

My theory is they are trying to drive market acceptance of the 84 month loan. If they get people to accept that, they feel like they can drive the MSRP up to where the "affordable" monthly payment of the 84 month loan is roughly the same as a 60 month loan. They essentially think we're all stupid.

Got a price on a new Tacoma two weeks ago. 42 for a SR5??? On further inspection, I found 6, 000 dollars worth of add ons. The sales rep said that they would work with me on the price. I told them to stuff the truck.

I think it's absolutely disgraceful what manufacturers are doing across the board. As some have said already, a big problem is the people paying the prices!

Pharmaceutical has been doing this for years. The auto industry has a lot of catching up to do.

Ben, you are doing an absolute GREAT service to your listeners. The price gouging has to stop, the auto market needs to collapse and hopefully will. I think Congress needs to do an investigation with expert witnesses such as yourself. The GREED is way out of control.

I was considering a pickup at one point but the prices here in Canada are quite insane, so I'll stick with my small suv

Going to dealerships was always a pain in the ass. Today it's pure torture. I used to get new cars every 3-4 years. Not anymore. Screw the dealers and manufacturers. I will drive my cars, which I love until the wheels fall off. I rather support my local repair shop, who I have faith and confidence with. Rather then go to the thieving dealers.

I just spent the summer restoring my 96 Suburban with a new crate motor, new transmission, suspension, accessories, radiator, brakes, bearings, gas tank and lines etc etc. Why? Because I'll be damned if I'm going to allow myself to be robbed by car makers who see me as a rube.

The manufacture learned that consumers were willing to pay crazy high prices for new cars over the last 2 years. They want piece of those pies, so they're jacking up their msrp price. I hope it will backfire as the avg consumer like myself can't afford to buy new any more.

2023 GRAND CHEROKEE L:
$495 extra for EVERY color you choose except white!
And a $1900 destination fee!
🙄

Dealers in New Brunswick, Canada add an "administration fee" up to $850.00 to every new car, and almost all add "window etching" of VIN # for up to $300.00...These are never mentioned by sales people, and you only find out that you are forced to pay that in the Business Manager's office. No wonder car dealers have such a sleazy reputation!

Good points Ben. Unfortunately there is a lot of greed everywhere.

I am a ram guy and just ordered a f350. The lariat vs Laramie pricing difference is pretty big. I just want a gasser for the payload, but diesel options cost about the same. I added the $4k winch option and that put me in line with Ram costs.

I always thought destination charge was funny. Imagine if you picked up a 99cent apple at the grocery store and saw a 15 cent destination charge on it...

They might be greedy but it’s our fault. What ever price they come up with, people line up to pay it.

Being a car hauler ( 80ft 9 car quick loader) we also load from the manufacturer, rail & ports, we make good money but some of those destination charges, we, the drivers see very little of it! Especially Nissans! However cars are getting bigger & heavier, especially electric cars! Can only haul 6 @ a time if they're SUVs!

seems like my local dealerships, toyota in particular are marking up the cars and trucks (4runner is what I'm looking at) by adding accessories like ceramic coat, clear bra, window tint for like 6k....that definitely hurts a bit..guess I need to wait on the market to change some more before I can get my new ride.
