Even More Secrets of the DLR

This is not supposed to be a sequel to the two videos made by Geoff Marshall and Londonist it is simply a collection of unmentioned facts or stuff that I have found personally
Also Tube line history videos are on hold right now as I want to try something new.
Apologies for the audio quality I wanted to see how a headphone mic would sound. Turns out not very good so bear with me.

Well edited mate, despite this being a well covered topic this is full of facts I certainly hadn't seen before. I can only assume 'Connaught' is pronounced the same way as it would be in Irish - a bit like 'connot'

Quite Interesting, and very descriptive & illustrative with the various maps, clips, etc. You've earned yourself another subscriber mate, I'm glad this video was recommended to me by the almighty algorithm lol

The original platform 4 at Stratford was built at the time of the electrification of the line for an intended electric shuttle service between Stratford and Fenchurch Street. This service was never introduced and the platform remained unused, without track, until taken over by the DLR. there was also a similar platform 7 at the West end of platform 6/8. This never saw any use but was still visible for many years; there was an advertising hoarding in it at one time. I don’t think any trace of platform 7 remains today, it has been lost to platform widening and one of the new lifts.

The route to Fenchurch Street still exists and very occasionally it is possible to ride it when passenger services are diverted over it. The track diverges from the Great Eastern main line at Bow Junction, it is the single track alongside the DLR where this turns South to head towards Bow Church station. It used to be double track but was singled to make room for the DLR. It joins the line into Fenchurch Street at Gas Factory Junction. There was one intermediate station on this section, Bow Road GER station, and some remains of it can still be seen, the 25 bus route passes the site. The main road passes both Bow Road District Line and Bow Church DLR Stations. Between them a bridge crosses the road: this was the site of the GER station. If you look up I think you can still see the remains of two staircases leading up to the platforms, at least they were still there a few years ago when I last looked. There was a similar pair of staircases at the other end of the station but these cannot be seen from the road. In steam days som services through Stratford used to run to Fenchurch Street. The station building still exists as a shop; I think it was a betting shop the last time I saw it.

There was another disused station in the area. The DLR line through Bow Church used to be part of the North London Railway line to poplar Docks which also had a passenger service to Poplar (East India Road) Station where the DLR All Saints station is today. The NLR Bow station was on the opposite side of the road to Bow Church DLR, but little trace remains today.

it seems that most abandoned stations on the tube/dlr are where new car parks are now! 😅 Btw, really good videos, lol, i just binge watched at least 10 of your videos

Good informative video Hugh, I have used the DLR service for a few years now when
travelling to London City Airport from Stratford International. It's a really good & fast
way to get to the airport and not too expensive when using contactless. I found the
end part of the video interesting when you mentioned the guy that flew a plane into
Herons Quay that has now become London City Airport. Well, I never knew that. Thanks

Not certain, but I *think* the idea behind Connaught station was that there would be some sort of fixed link from there into London City Airport. When plans progressed for the Woolwich Arsenal branch, which serves the airport directly, there was no longer any need to build Connaught.

Interesting facts. Just one thing, for Connaught it is not pronounced Con-nut, it is Con-alt.
