Now for a basic finish for the Ash Bowl. WATERLOX

But Walter, IS IT FOOD SAFE ???

There is a difference between food safe and Ingestible... Nearly ALL wood finishes once cured are safe for food contact. Some are better for dry foods, others cold we and others for hot foods.

I remembered the name of the Finish I want to try and it is: "Tried & True".

I usually sand my bowls to 600 or higher. Do you sand with a particular grit between coats? Maybe 0000 steel wool? I also finish up with spoon butter (wax) as the top coat.

This is an old video, so not sure if you'll see this, but I have heard that ash requires grain-filling for a really smooth finish. Had you already done that on this bowl, or did you sand it with a really fine grit before applying the Waterlox? If you did grain-fill the bowl (which is lovely btw) what process did you use? thanks!

Have you looked into bloxygen vs just squeezing the can? Not sure if it's worth it with frequently used small amounts.

looks ok but tung oil always looks like you peed on your bowl with the golden hue it gives. Apparently ellsworth uses it with beall though so it's good enough for the best. Regarding food safety even though all petrochem finishes will dry/cure, film finishes (not oil like this one) will crack with use and allow stuff to leech in to the wood. You will have a rank bowl after ranch dressing has been molding into it. So it's not just about whether it can be eaten or contacted.
