Me: tries it and makes 365 single lines in a year.

This is so true. One of my art teachers once told me "one of the most intimidating things in the world [for an artist] is a blank canvas". Just one line can be all it takes. ✏️

I've learned this exact same lesson years ago, and it's helped me in many areas, not just drawing, so I highly recommend it to anyone else struggling with anything they need to do in their lives.

Another tip, habits are easier to adapt when they're more accessible. It's so easy to pick up a tv remote while to draw you need to prepare paper/canvas/whatever, all the pencils and shit. Switch it around, hide your remote while keeping your drawing stuff right under your hand ready for action. Myself I have my tablet always connected and only covered in a protective case, right on my desk. Drawing program is on my desktop while to play games I need to launch Steam first. I find myself spending a lot more time drawing than playing for the last few years, which was unimaginable for me before.

Another important thing, draw for the fun of drawing, not for completeness or beauty of art. It's a hobby so find something you enjoy to draw regardless of quality of the final result. When you associate the activity with fun instead of frustration, it's much easier to make it addictive. That was a huge thing for me to break the mental barier and I didn't need to force myself to draw ever since I realised it. It just took the spot of the default way to spend my time. Which is crazy compared to how previously I would draw one line once a year and hated it because that line already looked wrong to me.

Yesterday I felt demotivated so I drew a sparrow, and it was pretty good, so In the end I had a page full of sparrows. It cheered me up a lot when my friend saw it and couldn’t believe I did it

This literally works for everything.

reading: just read one word.

exercising: just do one pushup

cleaning a room: just clean a small area.

do this to build the habit of just starting. Then once a habit, add more to the habit.

there is a great Ted talk about this, and it has changed my life.

I have done more in a year with my hobbies than i have in my 28 yrs thanks to this approach.

Ever since I started practicing drawing since 5 years ago I've struggled with being frequent and I genuinely hate it. I would often ask friends who also draw how I could get the motivation to begin so I can finally draw more often and all they'd say is "just open the canvas and draw whatever" and starting was literally my biggest problem so that helped nothing. This video is short and the answer is super simple yet I feel like it's the answer I've been looking for. You're right, once I draw at least something small I actually get going even if it's something rather simple or unfinished. Thank you so much for this video!!
