Mafdet was one of the earliest Feline Goddesses of ancient Egypt. She was later replaced by Bastet and Sekhmet.
Bastet is a Cat Goddess of war, fertility and protection. Sekhmet is a Lioness warrior Goddess, of fire, destruction and plagues.
They both have a lot in common and are daughter's of Ra. Making them both Sun Goddesses.
However Bastet is the friendlier Goddess.
Egyptians worshipped cats because they are great for killing rodents and other pestilence.
Today people keep cats as pets also to get rid of rodents and other pestilence.
Maybe the idea of having cats as pets came from the ancient Egyptians.
